Sightseeing

Alba is a beautiful little city with historical large piazza and cathedral. Wonderful pedestrian-only shopping streets. Be sure and wander off this shopping street too though—some of the best shopping is off the beaten “tourist” track. Here is where you can find the best Italian gelato in the WORLD. We know this because my youngest son did a careful analysis of all the ice cream he came across. He actually worked here one day to get an in depth view of how they make their ice cream. You will find the Gelateria Il Sacchero in downtown Alba, on the main pedestrian street, Vittorio Emanuele. It is across the street from the large beauty store with the little kids’ play/riding toys.

Upper Neive, is considered one of the most beautiful Italian hill towns by the Italian Tourism Ministry. It has wonderful restaurants and wine bars. Great little bar/café for coffee and brioche in the morning. Our new favorite is a winebar/enoteca in the piazza up the street from the church. They have outdoor seating and you can sit anywhere in the piazza and they bring you snacks to go with your wine. Very friendly and very popular with tourists and locals, most likely the attraction for everyone is how little they charge for a glass of wine.

Barbaresco is a small jewel with its little tower and great wine bars where you can also get a meal. If you enjoy walking, this is one of the most beautiful walks from our vineyard. It is about a three-mile walk (one way) with some hills to climb, but if you are up for it, it is well worth it for its beauty. The best way by foot to Barbaresco is to walk or drive to Tre Stelle. Find the road directly across from the church and then just follow that. You will pass the hail cannon and the old train depot in the valley. It is gorgeous, and you will encounter very few cars. Barbaresco has fixed up its iconic tower so you can visit it. It is really fun to make the visit to the top. Kids will love it, they have a cool bridge that you can stand on and ‘fly over Barbaresco.” From the top you can see our house. Starting in September they have a little happy hour on weekends. They suggest you make a reservation for it.

Barolo is about a 20-minute drive from the property and is well worth the visit. Small, picturesque hill town with great restaurants and some wineries to visit. The wine museum just opened and might be worth a visit. (The corkscrew museum is not worth the entrance fee, in my opinion.)

La Morra is another beautiful hill town still with its fortifying city wall, it sits on a higher elevation from the previous hill towns I mention above so the views are quite expansive. The Rocche Costamagna winery, a prestigious maker of Barolo, is located right in the heart of town and is open for visits.

The city of Torino is quite spectacular. It had a major face-lift renovation for the 2006 Winter Olympics but is still off the beaten tourist path. It has fantastic pedestrian-friendly streets, many covered with a portico, and is easy to navigate. The Royal Palace is modeled after Versailles and is well worth a visit. There is great shopping and dining and a large Egyptian museum. The best part about Torino is that parking is so easy—a major part of the historical center has underground parking. Try to go to the open market where they sell vegetables and fish, etc. It is really fun to see.

Grocery Shopping & Open Air Markets

Grocery Shopping You can do a surprising amount of grocery shopping at the two tiny stores in Treiso and Neive. The best store is the one near the rotunda as you are driving to Neive. It is a modest grocery store within a bar. It is on the left hand side after the rotunda. It says Pasticeria/Cafe/Bar (I think). This store has the best pastries and cookies in the area. Their meats and cheeses are also very good. This store also does not have a day of closure since it’s a bar cafe. There is a larger grocery store in Neive that is located near the bus depot after you cross the railroad tracks, t

Saturday Open Air Market in Alba is Not to be Missed!

Every city and hill town has their own open air markets. Here is where you can buy fish, fruit, vegetables, cheese, olives, flowers. Neive’s open air market is Wednesday mornings in the parking lot near the grocery store. Alba’s open air market is covered and has two sections, one with the larger, more sophisticated vendors, and one with the local farmers. Alba’s is Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday mornings, with the one on Saturday being the largest.
