This urban park is huge and located in downtown Spokane. It was the site of Expo ‘74, the World’s Fair. that year. More recently (2020) Riverfront Park made the National Geographic list of America's most beautiful urban parks! There are many things to see and do including the gondola ride that takes you over the beautiful Spokane Falls. Plus, there’s the Giant Radio Flyer wagon slide, metal sculptures of Bloomsday runners, and stunning views of the river and falls (a must-see). There’s the carrousel, winter ice skating and much, much more including many fun eateries in the area accessible on foot once your there.

Manito Park is on the South Hill with many acres of beauty. The Rose Garden, Duncan Garden, and the Japanese Garden are worth seeing. An easy way to get there is through the entry on Grand Boulevard and 18th Avenue. Awesome place to walk and bicycle.

Felts Field was the home of the 1927 Air Races and Air Show. This is a great place to watch small planes take off and land. You can also get a bite to eat at the Skyway Cafe. Close by, there is a small but nice aviation museum that's worth seeing.

This mountain is big and beautiful and a semi-major trek (75 minutes) from The Coop. Until 1912 it was known as Mt. Baldy. It is kind of a bald-looking bump as you look to the north and slightly east. In the winter it offers snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and skiing. Interestingly, the first double-chair ski lift in the world was installed there in 1946. In the summer there is hiking with breathtaking views. Getting to the top by car challenges one’s sense of safety as cliffs and no guardrails abound. Small cars and total sobriety are recommended. Additionally you’ll need a Washington State Discovery Pass. Park gates are locked at 8:00pm so don’t be inside after this time or expect a long and cold night in the car! Gates open at 6:30am during the summer. Bring warm clothes, hiking boots, and your camera!

Besides beautiful skiing and a long, breathtaking gondola ride to the top, Silver Mountain also has an awesome indoor water park. Located in Kellogg, Idaho, this is a couple of hours drive from The Coop. If you're driving to or from The Coop and going past Kellogg, it's worth a look-see. To take in the water park or skiing all in a single day would make for a long drive and long day from The Coop!

WSU or "WAZUU" is in Pullman, Washington, about 80 miles southish of The Coop. The WSU campus is a mixture of old, modern, huge, beautiful and a fun place to explore. If you go, be sure to check out Ferdinands on campus for tasty ice cream and Cougar Gold Cheese. The Museum of Anthropology and the Museum of Art are worth seeing too. Factoid 1: WSU, originally WSC, was a Land Grant College slated and earmarked by Abe Lincoln. Factoid 2: Cougar Gold Cheese comes in a large tin. It was created as a way to preserve and ship cheese during WWII. Factoid 3: Edward R. Murrow is an alumnus of WSU, and the College of Communication is named after him. Factoid 4: As you drive through the town of Colfax, seriously watch your speed. The town is small and needs your money. Factoid 5: Go Cougs! Some of our guests stay in The Coop and visit their kids studying at WSU. The Coop is fairly close to I-195 and it's a gorgeous drive through the Palouse to Pullman... Wheat fields abound and before harvest time the golden rolling hills are stunning. Depending on your situation, a stay at The Coop may be a lot cheaper and relaxing than staying in Pullman or Moscow for Mom's or Dad's Weekends.

Located in Cheney, Washington, this campus is a 25 minute hop-skip-jump from The Coop. EWU is a smaller State University that offers an excellent education. In fact, it is the best value for State Universities in Washington. There is the EWU Downtown Spokane campus too. Go Eagles!

We add Yellowstone here because it’s an incredibly enchanting huge spot about 7 hours from The Coop. Maybe on the way here or in your travels you can visit Yellowstone. A must see. It’s a busy place with loads of visitors… but it’s so worth it for a day or more. Some words that describe Yellowstone are: Prehistoric, Weirdly Cool, Bisson, Wild, Dangerous, Hot Geyser Water, Old Faithful, Mud Pots, and Stunning-Unusual Beauty. The bus tours are very good. Food in the park… expensively meh.

If you like books you’ll enjoy Auntie’s. Located downtown it’s also somewhat of a landmark (in my mind). In Spokane’s history this building was at one end of what was then, Chinatown. Some argue that there were more Japanese folks who once lived in this area, hence “Japantown.” Noodle houses, laundry businesses and opium dens made up the area several blocks to the east. A large contingent of immigrant workers are responsible for the transcontinental railroad that crossed the country in the 1860s and connected Spokane. Many of those workers settled here. Over the years the area fell to ruins and became icky. In preparation for Expo ‘74 the place was cleaned up and forever changed. Looking to the east one will see the huge, Davenport Grand Hotel that covers what was once a thriving Chinatown. Maybe you’ll find a book on this cool history at Auntie’s!

The Hiawatha Bike Trial is an amazing experience. All down hill this trail is along the very old Milwaukee Railroad right-of-way that once wound its way though the mountains. The tracks have been long removed and it’s a perfect, wide, bike trail with vistas that will scream, “Wow!” You bike through tunnels (1.6 miles is the longest) and over mountain trestles. Spectacular and easy riding. Historic info markers along the way too. You can rent bikes and helmets there (about $75 a head). Reservations and early morning is our recommendation. Bring water, snacks, layered clothing, camera. The start is about a 2 hour drive from the Coop and the bike ride itself is about 2 hours. Then on your way back eat lunch in Wallace, Idaho. We did this in July 2021 and it was much fun.

If you like Chinese food, you will like this place. One of our favs. Big menu for everyone’s taste. They have sushi too. Brian likes to mix wasabi and soy sauce together and dip avocado rolls in this sinus-clearing nectar.

Excellent fire roasted pizza. They use gas and not hardwood but the pizzas and salads are superb. If you like beer they have many on tap to choose from. The place is nestled in a gentrified neighborhood known at the Perry District. It’s not a long drive from The Coop and on the lower South Hill.

This course is 18 holes, right down the road, and very pretty. We don't really care much for the name and fortunately it’s being changed to the Latah Creek Golf Course. In July 2021, Coop guest, Daryl, got a hole-in-one on the ninth! Maybe you will have the same luck!
