Sightseeing

Treat yourselves to a wondrous nature reserve that is nothing short of a magnificent little piece of heaven, full of history and beauty. This site, located in northern Israel (near Kiryat Shmona) isn’t only a rare and exquisite archaeological treasure but it is also one of Israel’s most stunning natural attractions. The Dan river, originating from the springs at Tel Dan, is the largest of three sources of the Jordan river and this site (covering a total area of 120 acres) has a variety of walks you can take through the reserve while enjoying its beautiful waters streams and treetops. The longest route is the most thrilling one, for it combines antiquities with gorgeous natural sights. All these paths will ultimately lead you to a pool where the river has its source. There’s a total of four nature trails that crosses water channels amid big forest trees and a flourishing plantation. This site is also famous for its incredible archaeological excavations, offering a unique exploration of both an ancient Canaanite civilization (about 4,000 years ago) and the Israelite tribe of Dan. These ancient ruins are truly amazing and will give you a new perspective on the historic events that took place in the Northern Kingdom. Make sure you don’t miss out on an ancient water-powered flour mill (located in the center of the nature reserve) that dates back approx. 150 years ago, as well as an ancient arch that is at least 3800 years old and is probably one of the earliest man-made arches found in the world.

Mount Hermon Ski Resort is Israel’s only winter ski and snowboard resort located in the Golan Heights in the far north of the country. It is amazing to think that in a country as small as Israel you can drive two hours from the desert to a ski resort, and whilst Mount Hermon Ski Resort is not a world-class resort, it has snow for much of the winter and is incredibly popular with Israelis and tourists alike who take a day or two to enjoy the winter sport activities. In the spring, summer, and autumn, the resort takes on a different role with huge amounts of other outdoor activities taking advantage of the amazing landscape including a mountain bike park and hiking.

Experience one of Israel’s greatest natural wonders by taking a trip up North to the Hula Valley. Explore the Hula Valley Nature Reserve and see thousands of birds from dozens of species. They represent a small fraction of the 500 million birds that cross Israel’s airspace twice a year. This location for migrating birds to relax on their annual commute from Europe to Africa, is now a reserve thanks to hard working scientists and nature activists. Hula Lake Park, known in Hebrew as Agmon HaHula (Hebrew: אגמון החולה‬), is located in the southern part of the Hula Valley, north of the nature reserve and distinct from it. The lake covers an area of one square kilometer, interspersed with islands that serve as protected bird nesting sites. It has become a major stopover for migrating birds flying from Europe to Africa and back, and also a major birdwatching site. Participants will get to see not only the beauty and wildlife that the Hula Reserve has to offer, but also an important piece of history.

While touring the Galilee, don't miss SPNI's Beit Ussishkin Museum, a unique nature museum telling the story of nature, geography and archaeology in the lush Galilee panhandle. The museum is housed in a beautiful stone structure, designed by architect Leopold Krakauer, and built in the 1950s by expert stonemasons from Jerusalem. SPNI established the museum from concerns that the draining of the Hula Wetlands would result in the loss of native wildlife and landscape values in the area. Examples of wildlife, with emphasis on avian abundance in the region, and three-dimensional dioramas of the diverse habitats of the Galilee, Golan, and Hermon, were preserved. Special exhibitions focus on the life of man in the biblical period and the museum is known for its excellent nature films.
