The National Motor Museum is a fantastic trip out! Set in the beautiful and historic village of Beaulieu (well worth a visit before or after the museum). It will appeal especially to motor enthusiasts with a wealth of information and automobiles on display including some rare and unique ones! There’s also plenty to see for people with other interests such as the stunning grounds and ruins, a monorail, the stately home and a war exhibition. They also have an amazing ‘love lock tree’ in one of the garden sections if couples want to bring a special padlock with them when they visit (we did ours in 2017 and it was such a lovely moment, highly recommended!).

Solent Sky Museum began as the RJ Mitchell Memorial Museum in 1974. Since that time, it has expanded to include all aviation in Hampshire and on the Isle of Wight, the region known as the Solent. Although it now houses many aeroplanes, their core is still the Supermarine Spitfire, which was designed and built in Southampton. Hampshire and the Solent region were the centre of the world for aviation research and development between 1910 and 1960. More than 26 aircraft manufacturers made this area their home and built everything from biplanes to spacecraft, and of course the legendary Spitfire. Solent Sky Museum depicts the incredible story of aviation in Hampshire and the Solent region, with more than 20 airframes from the golden age of aviation.

Hatchet Pond is the largest area of fresh water in the New Forest, which is located just outside the quaint village of Beaulieu. There are benches along the way, where you can take a rest and in the summer months there is often an ice cream van at Hatchet Pond car park too, where you can enjoy a nice refreshment after your walk. There is also a disabled toilet. We’ve been here during different months and times and it’s always stunning, relaxing and enjoyable. Whether taking in the view from your car, going for walks or having a picnic, we always have a great time here and recommend a trip if your checking out The New Forest.

Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum

Bursledon Brickworks Industrial Museum is all set to become one of the key visitor attractions in the South. The only remaining steam driven brickworks in the country, they show how brick making made the leap from small scale production to 20 million bricks a year. The fully restored and working machinery helped them to win the coveted Institute of Mechanical Engineering Heritage Award in 2011 and on Open Days they can show it all running as it was when it ceased producing bricks. On site you can see the patented method adopted to dry the bricks and the huge kiln block that was used to fire them ready for collection. The museum has other clay based collections on site and lots of opportunities on offer which makes a visit both enjoyable and educational.

Southampton Common

Southampton Common is a large open space to the north of the city centre of Southampton, England. It is bounded by the districts of Shirley, Bassett, Highfield and Portswood. The area supports a large variety of wildlife, including the largest recorded population of the internationally rare great crested newt. It is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Southampton Common currently includes 365 acres (1.48 km2)[1] of woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children's play area, a model yachting lake, and a fishing lake. The Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre at the southern end has been built on the former site of Southampton Zoo and the comprehensive displays document the natural history of the area; with interactive resources, educational facilities and information about local wildlife and environmental management. To the west, bordering on Hill Lane, is a historic cemetery that also includes many rare flora and fauna. Cemetery Lake is popular for birds. The south east of the Common includes an open-air paddling pool that has recently been refurbished and a play area for children. This is located near to a car parking zone and the Cowherds Inn, a local landmark which has a history going back to the 17th century.

Hythe Ferry station

Hythe Pier, the Hythe Pier Railway and the Hythe Ferry provide a link between the English port city of Southampton and the Hampshire village of Hythe on the west side of Southampton Water. It is used both by commuters and tourists and forms an important link in the Solent Way and E9 European coastal paths. A ferry has operated from Hythe to Southampton since the Middle Ages, and it is marked on a map by Christopher Saxton of 1575. Steam vessels were introduced in 1830. From 1889 the Percy family were involved in the running of the ferry, and from 1900 to 1980 the service was run by the General Estates Company, owned by the Percy family. As a consequence of this, many of the ferries used carried the name Hotspur, named after Henry Percy or Hotspur, who was immortalised by William Shakespeare. On your arrival at Hythe Pier you can jump on the world’s oldest electric train, which will transport you to the pier entrance at Hythe. Hythe Pier Railway is Britain’s oldest continuously operating electric pier train and has been awarded a certificate to that effect by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Riverside Park

Riverside Park is a 32 hectare site located along the River Itchen and includes six football pitches, two cricket pitches, a tennis court, skate park and three play areas. The Southampton and District Society of Model Engineers run a miniature railway open to the public on Sunday afternoons during the summer months. Take a leisurely walk along the River Itchen, a chalk river designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Recognised internationally as an important habitat for wildlife such as salmon, water voles, kingfishers, dragonflies and otters. The non-tidal section of the river support a variety of freshwater fish, including dace, roach and the migratory salmon and sea trout. Continuing along the river gives views onto the conservation areas on the other side where unusual species make their home including kingfisher, water vole, otter, various warblers and sometimes even cuckoos. The Itchen Navigation Heritage Trail Project is a Heritage Lottery project managed by the Wildlife Trust preserving an internationally important chalk river system for future generations. They have produced a range of leaflets on walks along the Itchen Navigation from Riverside Park to Winchester. Bargeman's Walk Mansbridge is a two mile circular walk starting and ending at Woodmill.

Southampton City Art Gallery

The Southampton City Art Gallery is located in the Civic Centre on Commercial Road. The gallery opened in 1939 with much of the initial funding from the gallery coming from two bequests one from Robert Chipperfield and another from Frederick William Smith. The gallery was damaged during World War II and repairing this damaged delayed its reopening until 1946. The gallery's art collection covers six centuries of European art history, with over 3,500 works. It is housed in an example of 1930s municipal architecture. The gallery holds a Designated Collection, considered of national importance. Highlights of the permanent collection include a 14th-century altarpiece by Allegretto Nuzi, of the Italian Giambattista Pittoni; the Perseus series by Burne-Jones; paintings by the Camden Town Group and The London Group; sculpture by Jacob Epstein, Auguste Rodin, Edgar Degas, Henri Gaudier Brzeska, Richard Deacon and Tony Cragg; and Richard Long photographs. Thousands of visitors explore the exhibitions and displays every month and, through a programme of educational activities, Southampton City Art Gallery provides opportunities for greater access, involvement and understanding of art for people of all ages. The gallery's educational service works closely with a range of professional visual artists, including Melanie Rose, Debra Marsh, Jo Bresloff and Alastair Eales.

SeaCity Museum

Based at the heart of Southampton, SeaCity Museum tells the story of the people of the city, their fascinating lives and historic connections with Titanic and the sea. Visit SeaCity Museum and Southampton to discover how they bring maritime history to life through an interactive experience designed for all ages. Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic disaster more felt than in Southampton, where more than 500 households lost a family member. Visitors to the museum will discover how many people worked on board and the huge variety of jobs the crew carried out. The centre-piece of this gallery features a 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic, showing the intricate layout of the vessel. Visitors will be able to experience the sights and sounds of Southampton in 1912, when it was home port to some 23 steamship companies including Royal Mail, Union Castle and American Lines. The transfer of White Star Line’s transatlantic express service from Liverpool to Southampton in 1907 had established Southampton as Britain’s premier passenger port. The town was bustling with activity and the local economy flourished with new shops, restaurants and businesses. The White Star Dock, later known as Ocean Dock, opened in 1911. It was from here, Berth 44, that the Titanic was to leave Southampton on 10 April 1912. Through powerful oral testimony from survivors, the Disaster Room describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and the rescue of passengers by the Carpathia. Also, there is a fascinating audio visual show for visitors to find out about the British Inquiry, which was held in London soon after the disaster.

Southampton Town Walls

Southampton's town walls are a sequence of defensive structures built around the town in southern England. Although earlier Roman and Anglo-Saxon settlements around Southampton had been fortified with walls or ditches, the later walls originate with the move of the town to the current site in the 10th century. This new town was defended by banks, ditches and the natural curve of the river and coastline. The Normans built a castle in Southampton but made no attempts to improve the wider defences of the town until the early 13th century, when Southampton's growing prosperity as a trading centre and conflict with France encouraged the construction of a number of gatehouses and stone walls to the north and east sides of the settlement. In 1338 Southampton was raided by French forces; the town's defences proved inadequate, particularly along the quays on the west and south of the city. Edward III ordered some immediate improvements to Southampton's town walls but it was not until the 1360s that substantial work began. Over the coming decades the town was entirely enclosed by a 2 km (1.25-mile) long stone wall, with 29 towers and eight gates. With the advent of gunpowder weapons in the 1360s and 1370s, Southampton was one of the first towns in England to install the new technology to existing fortifications and to build new towers specifically to house cannon. Southampton's town walls remained an important defensive feature during the 15th century, the gatehouses sometimes being used as important civic facilities, including acting as the town's guildhall and housing the town's gaol. From the end of the 17th century their importance steadily declined and the walls were slowly demolished or adapted for other uses throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. This process continued into the early 20th century until, in the post-war years, the walls were recognised as an important historical feature of Southampton. Conservation projects have since occurred and the walls are now promoted as a tourist attraction.

Titanic Engineers' Memorial

The Titanic Engineers' Memorial is a memorial in East (Andrews) Park, Southampton, United Kingdom, to the engineers who died in the Titanic disaster on 15 April 1912. The bronze and granite memorial was originally unveiled by Sir Archibald Denny, president of the Institute of Marine Engineers on 22 April 1914. Joseph Bell was the Chief Engineer Officer on the RMS Titanic. His staff consisted of 24 engineers, 6 electrical engineers, two boilermakers, a plumber and a clerk. None survived the sinking. The monument was originally erected with funding from worldwide donations. It was designed and built by Whitehead and Son of the Imperial Works, Kennington Oval in London. Ferdinand Victor Blundstone was the sculptor. It is officially a Grade II listed building. It features a bronze statue of Nike, the Greek Winged Goddess of Victory, created by Trieste-born sculptor Romeo Rathmann, and carvings which represent the engineer officers of the ship, who died in the disaster. On a sunny afternoon on 22 April 1914, 100,000 people gathered in Andrews Park, Southampton to witness the unveiling of the memorial to the engineers who lost their lives on the Titanic two years earlier. The bronze and granite structure was draped in the Union flag. Unveiling the statue, Sir Archibald Denny said: "By the manner of their deaths [the engineers] carried out one of the finest traditions of our race." "They must have known that pumping could do no more than delay the final catastrophe, yet they stuck pluckily to their duty." "Driven back from boiler-room to boiler-room, fighting for every inch of draught to give time for the launching of the boats, not one of those brave officers was saved."

The Bargate is a Grade I listed medieval gatehouse in the city centre of Southampton, England. Constructed in Norman times as part of the Southampton town walls, it was the main gateway to the city. The building is a scheduled monument, which has served as a temporary exhibition and event space for Southampton Solent University since 2012. It is the impressive north entrance to the medieval section of Southampton, which contains a wealth of character and heritage through its fascinating remains, monuments and buildings. Situated by the high street and West Quay shopping centre, it’s a great landmark to see if you’re in the area.

Holyrood Church (or Holy Rood Church) was one of the original five churches serving the old walled town of Southampton, England. Built in 1320, the church was destroyed by enemy bombing during the blitz in November 1940. In 1957 the shell of the church was dedicated as a memorial to the sailors of the Merchant Navy who lost their lives in World War II. It is a Grade II* listed building.

Mayflower Park is a large waterfront park, in the old part of the City with views over The River Test. It is one of the most used of our city parks and continues to be very popular with residents and visitors to the city alike. Being the only city centre waterside park with views across the tidal reaches of the River Test, with all its maritime traffic, makes it a very important resource to the city. The park is especially important to the residents of the inner city estates and numerous new residential developments in its catchment area as well as the guests of the adjacent hotels. During the Boat Show, including setting up time, access to the park is restricted. This scenic city park was named after the historic sailing from Southampton to America by the Pilgrim Fathers in 1620.

Roughly 10 miles from Southampton, Marwell Zoo is a 140-acre zoo situated in Colden Common near Winchester, in the English county of Hampshire. It is owned and run by the registered charity Marwell Wildlife. The zoo is home to over 1,200 animals of 135 species. The charity undertakes a range of educational and conservation activities, with a particular focus on Africa in addition to work from its base. We’ve been here several times and always have a great time! There’s plenty to see and do and the animals are amazing!

Roughly 54 miles from Southampton, Durdle Door (sometimes written Durdle Dor) is a natural limestone arch on the Jurassic Coast near Lulworth in Dorset, England. It is owned by the Welds, a family who own 12,000 acres in Dorset in the name of the Lulworth Estate. It is open to the public. We visited there recently and were stunned at the scenery and beaches. A real marvel and an amazing place to visit if you’re in the Dorset area, highly recommended!

Roughly 33 miles from Southampton, Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument in Wiltshire, England. It consists of a ring of standing stones, each around 13 feet (4.0 m) high, seven feet (2.1 m) wide, and weighing around 25 tons. The stones are set within earthworks in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, including several hundred tumuli (burial mounds). Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. The surrounding circular earth bank and ditch, which constitute the earliest phase of the monument, have been dated to about 3100 BC. Radiocarbon dating suggests that the first bluestones were raised between 2400 and 2200 BC, although they may have been at the site as early as 3000 BC. One of the most famous landmarks in the United Kingdom, Stonehenge is regarded as a British cultural icon. It has been a legally protected Scheduled Ancient Monument since 1882, when legislation to protect historic monuments was first successfully introduced in Britain. The site and its surroundings were added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986. Stonehenge is owned by the Crown and managed by English Heritage; the surrounding land is owned by the National Trust. Stonehenge could have been a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. Deposits containing human bone date from as early as 3000 BC, when the ditch and bank were first dug, and continued for at least another 500 years. We had an incredible time visiting Stonehenge. It’s unlike anything we’ve seen before and absolutely fascinating to witness and learn about. A remarkable and unique site to see and experience, highly recommended!

Roughly 12 miles from Southampton, Winchester Cathedral is a cathedral of the Church of England in Winchester, Hampshire, England. It is one of the largest cathedrals in Europe, with the greatest overall length of any Gothic cathedral. Dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Saint Peter, Saint Paul and, before the Reformation, Saint Swithun, it is the seat of the Bishop of Winchester and centre of the Diocese of Winchester. The cathedral is a Grade I listed building. The Cathedral is the opposite of a dusty museum. It’s an inspiring space for daily worship and a busy community hosting a huge range of activities. Over 80 full and part-time staff and 700 volunteers keep everything running smoothly, led by the Dean and Chapter with guidance from the Bishop and expert advisors. Charitable trusts, foundations and supporters also make a huge contribution. An incredible site to behold, its stunning both inside and out. They have a variety or tours and often host events and concerts inside. Highly recommended!

The Great Hall, “one of the finest surviving aisled halls of the 13th century”, contains the greatest symbol of medieval mythology, King Arthur’s Round Table, and is all that now remains of Winchester Castle. Come and see the iconic Round Table of Arthurian legend that has dominated Winchester’s ancient Great Hall for centuries. This is one of the finest surviving examples of a 13th century aisled hall and is an enhancement of the original Winchester Castle built by William the Conqueror. Discover the history and uncover the battles, secrets and trials for terrorism and treason held here. We really enjoyed visiting this place, growing up with stories of King Arthur and The Round Table it was amazing to see and learn more about it in person.

Roughly 12 miles from Southampton, Winchester City Mill has stood at the heart of the historic city of Winchester since Saxon times. Over 1,000 years old, Winchester City Mill is probably the oldest working watermill in the country. The building has a fascinating past, with connections to Alfred the Great, Mary Tudor and JMW Turner. From near destruction in the 1920s, City Mill has been painstakingly restored by the National Trust. Today, it still produces and sells freshly ground wholemeal flour.

Roughly 12 miles from Southampton, St. Catherine's Hill is a 43-hectare (110-acre) biological Site of Special Scientific Interest on the outskirts of Winchester in Hampshire. It is managed by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust and most of it is an Iron Age hillfort, which is a Scheduled Monument. The top of the hill is ringed by the ramparts of an Iron Age hill fort. In the centre a copse of beech trees contains the site of the 12th-century chapel of St. Catherine. There is also a mizmaze, probably cut between 1647 and 1710. The hill was cut off from the Itchen water meadows for over a hundred years by the construction of the Didcot, Newbury and Southampton Railway in the 1890s and the Winchester By-pass (A33) in the 1930s. The railway closed in the 1960s and the road was removed following construction of the M3 motorway to the east through Twyford Down in the 1990s. Whilst this reunited the hill with its historic setting to the west, it is now largely cut off from the hills to the east. The routing of the original by-pass to the east of Winchester had been controversial and its replacement by the M3 led to a large-scale protest. The hill was where the game of Winchester College football was played after being moved from Kingsgate Street and before moving to its modern form on canvases around the school. In 1922, money raised by The Old Wykehamist Lodge of Freemasons hosting the Public Schools Lodge's Council Festival was used to buy the hill and donate it to the College. We love going for walks here, the scenery and views are beautiful and the walk up the steps is a killer!

The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens is an arboretum comprising 72 hectares (180 acres) accommodating over 42,000 trees and shrubs in about 12,000 taxa, notably a collection of oaks, camellia, magnolia and rhododendron. The Gardens are located roughly 9 miles from Southampton in Hampshire, England, and were formerly known simply as the Hillier Arboretum, founded by nurseryman Harold Hillier in June 1953 when he acquired Jermyn's House and its grounds. The arboretum was given to Hampshire County Council in 1977 to be managed as a charitable trust. Sir Harold Hillier was knighted in 1983, just two years before his death at age 80 in 1985. The Gardens were listed as Grade II on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in 1997. We had an amazing day out here, the gardens, plants, trees and flower displays are spectacular and the environment is relaxing and beautiful, highly recommended!

Mottisfont Abbey is a historical priory and country estate in Hampshire, England roughly 13 miles from Southampton. Sheltered in the valley of the River Test, the property is now operated by the National Trust. About 350,000 people visit each year. Portsdown Hill Viewpoint

Portsdown Hill is a long chalk ridge in Hampshire, England roughly 16 miles from Southampton. The highest point of the hill lies within Fort Southwick at 131m above sea level. The ridge offers good views to the south over Portsmouth, the Solent, Hayling Island and Gosport, with the Isle of Wight beyond. The hill is on the mainland, just to the north of Ports Creek, which separates the mainland from Portsea Island, on which lies the main part of the city of Portsmouth, one of the United Kingdom's main naval bases. To the north lies the Forest of Bere, with the South Downs visible in the distance. Butser Hill can be seen on a clear day. The hill is formed from an inlier of chalk which has been brought to the surface by an east-west upfold of the local strata known as the Portsdown Anticline. Southwick House is close by the north side of the hill, the HQ for U.S. General Dwight D. Eisenhower during the D-Day invasions; the generals prayed together before D-Day at Christ Church Portsdown, on the hill, which has a memorial window. The A3(M) motorway cuts through the east side of the hill while the original A3 climbs over the centre by the George Inn pub and Christ Church. The nearest railway stations (from west to east) are Portchester, Cosham and Bedhampton. There are many stories about real and imagined tunnels in the hill. The area contains active military research establishments, including one of the core sites of Dstl (known as Dstl Portsdown West) and sites run by QinetiQ. P art of the hill has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Most of the southern flank of the ridge is designated as access land under the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 and thereby freely available for the public to enjoy on foot. We’ve been here at night several times and the view is just stunning! We enjoyed relaxing in the car with music and taking in the scenery. There’s also a popular 24 hour burger van which does some great food!

The Emirates Spinnaker Tower is a 170-metre (560 ft) landmark observation tower in Portsmouth, England roughly 20 miles from Southampton. It is the centrepiece of the redevelopment of Portsmouth Harbour, which was supported by a National Lottery grant. Its shape was chosen by Portsmouth residents from a selection. The tower, designed by local firm HGP Architects and engineering consultants Scott Wilson and built by Mowlem, reflects Portsmouth's maritime history through its being modelled and named after a spinnaker, a type of sail that balloons outward. The tower was opened on 18 October 2005. The tower is owned by Portsmouth City Council, but operationally it is managed by Continuum Leading Attractions, a cultural attractions group based in York. Continuum also runs five other visitor attractions across the country. Following a commercial sponsorship deal with Dubai-based Emirates airline, the tower was renamed in July 2015.

They have a diverse range of shows and present a mixture of spectacular touring productions, from musicals - many direct from the West End – to dance, opera, drama, ballet and comedy. We’ve seen lots of productions here and always have a wonderful time! The theatre itself is stunning and they have a top floor restaurant which serves delicious food before the performances begin (going up for desert in the interval is always fun!). Well worth a show and dinner package when you’re here!

St James' Park, Southampton is a recreational area situated in the district of Shirley, Southampton opposite St James' Church, Southampton. It is adjacent to Winchester Road and surrounded by housing, some of it dating from the mid Victorian Period. It is supported by The Friends Of St James' Park who run a cafe and organise community events. The land now occupied by the park was gradually surrounded by housing as the suburb of Shirley, Southampton developed in the mid 1800s. At first it remained grazing land but eventually became a nursery and then a gravel pit. This last use has resulted in the park having a pleasant sunken appearance. In 1907 the land was purchased by the local authority and became a public park after landscaping in 1911.

Oasis Down to Earth Farm is a community centre with a difference: they are based on a farm in urban Southampton. As a not-for-profit charity, their mission is to provide a socially inclusive, happy experience where people of all abilities and differences are respected and valued. They aim to educate, empower and engage with the local community. They offer people the opportunity to interact with animals and the natural environment. The facilities include a barn, dairy, large garden to grow fruit and vegetables, pond, woodland area, wood workshop and two fully equipped community buildings suitable for a range of indoor activities. During the week they offer activities for adults with Learning Disabilities, children with special needs (SEN and NEET) and groups for people living with Dementia. At the weekend they host children's birthday parties and are open to the general public. The Farm was formed in 1992 and was the amalgamation of Southampton City Farm and Millbrook School Rural Science Unit and became Down to Earth Farm. It has been a City farm since 1976 with horticultural route for the site dating back to 1936. In 2008 Oasis Community Learning (part of Oasis Academy Lord's Hill) took over the running of the farm from Southampton City council. In 2020 the farm changed its name back to Southampton City Farm. The farm recently lost some land so now tend Approx. 1.2 hectares of workable land alongside the community building and other buildings which facilitate the programs that run throughout the week. The land is mostly devoted to grazing areas for the animals, with a horticultural area at the western end of the site where they aim to grow a diverse crop to feed the animals and begin to provide ingredients for the kitchen.

We had a great time visiting here. The surrounding area is beautiful, the staff are friendly and the bottle feeding was really fun and special, highly recommended!

Alpaca Farming Hensting Alpacas is a family run business, here it the local countryside of Hampshire. They originally purchased a piece of land as an investment and set about searching for ideas as to what to do with it. They decided upon alpacas as a viable option and quickly discovered just how adorable and addictive these animals are. Their journey began by meeting other breeders and of course, alpacas. Having scrupulously researched and read an abundance of information and prepared the land, they then welcomed their starter herd of alpaca to Alpaca Meadow. Now amid their twelfth summer of successful birthing and having begun to sell stock, they currently have 60 alpacas, and expect 12 births in 2020, so the herd is steadily growing. They have developed their smallholding into an enterprise and ensure the best for the animals and customers at all times. In fact, in order to accommodate our growing enterprise, in 2012 they invested in a further 12 acres encompassing a mile of the River Navigation. They have since started Walking Alpacas at the farm on the land we they own in Otterbourne.

Thorpe Park Resort, commonly known as Thorpe Park, is an amusement park located between the towns of Chertsey and Staines-upon-Thames in Surrey, England roughly 62 miles from Southampton. It is operated and owned by Merlin Entertainments and includes rides, a themed hotel, live events and Stealth, the UK's fastest rollercoaster. After demolition of the Thorpe Park Estate in the 1930s, the site became a gravel pit managed by Ready Mix Concrete (RMC). When the pits were expended, RMC regenerated the site for leisure, opening Thorpe Park as an outdoor activity park in 1979. It has since grown into one of the major theme parks in the UK. Major attractions include a large water ride Tidal Wave, a number of rollercoasters including Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Stealth, Saw – The Ride, The Swarm, The Walking Dead: The Ride and dark ride Derren Brown's Ghost Train: Rise of the Demon. Other smaller attractions include a water area called Amity Beach and an Angry Birds themed land. It also has on-site accommodation, the Thorpe Shark Hotel. We’ve been here several times and absolutely love it! The rides are incredible and such good fun. It can get very busy with long ques in the holidays and weekends however if you time it right and go during a quieter period you’ll have an amazing day!

This award-winning Winchester restaurant is an unbelievable dining experience! Within 2 years of opening, the team acquired one of the most prestigious accolades in catering, a Michelin Star (which is still retains). Last year, The Black Rat was proud to announce it placed 2nd in OpenTable’s Top 50 Fit for Foodies restaurants 2018 in the whole of the UK! More recently, in February of 2019, The Black Rat placed in the top 50 romantic places to dine in the UK (fine dining category). They describe their style as modern British with influences from all over the culinary world. Ingredients are sourced from some of the best local suppliers that can be found, and they have their own forager who brings the most seasonal and fresh products available, on a daily basis. Located nearby is the kitchen allotment or garden where they grow some of their own herbs and vegetables, all of which helps to inspire the kitchen team to create the menu using wild, unusual and forgotten ingredients. The wine list boasts some 80 wines with a balance between Old and New world. The list contains some iconic wines that are great with delicious food but also it has balanced and well-rounded wine that can be enjoyed without food. The Black Rat was previously run as a pub for as long as anyone can remember and was a well-known building within Winchester. It went through a major transformation and has been completely renovated, whilst keeping all of its old-world charm decor, nooks and crannies. The building itself dates back to the 1700’s although in the cellars there is evidence of 15th or 16th century stonework with thick walls and lowered ceiling. We’ve had the pleasure of eating here before and it remains one of the best restaurant meals that we’ve ever had! Highly recommended!

Rumour has it that The Roll Call has had quite the eventful past. The building that now stands on Woolston Road is the third Roll Call building to be built there. The first it is believed met an end in a fire that saw it re built only to be bombed in World War 2. We are pleased to say that the third Roll Call is still standing! Shaun and Roz has been familiar with the Roll Call for many years, knowing it as their local. George's Restaurant

Welcome to George's Restaurant where they offer the taste of quality Greek foods and specialities in the heart of the South coast. Based in Southampton they have one of the oldest privately owned family restaurants in the area. The staff create a friendly and inviting atmosphere that ensures your meal is a relaxed and pleasant experience. In 1936 a young Greek Cypriot named Michael Hannides left his seaside village, at the far eastern side of his sunny island, to seek his fortune in sunny Britain. After working as an ice cream salesman in Southampton, a baker in London and a 'chippie' in Wales (where he learnt Welsh!) He had finally saved enough money to launch a restaurant - dubbed George's after his second Christian name, that was in 1940. The first George's was a straightforward, no frills sort of place where the quality of food was paramount : people travelled miles to savour specialities like Spaghetti and Meatballs, Michael worked all the hours God made to build up his business and establish his reputation. A new ring road meant that George's had to be demolished though a bigger and better building rose up in its place. Michael incapable of being idle used up the waiting time by making tables for the new Restaurant! Before he passed away in August 2004 he often looked back on a medley of memories, especially from the heyday of the big liners, when he played host to a wide range of customers - from the Coroner, Mr D.H.B. Harfield to merchant seamen like the young Tommy Steele. The list of rich and famous to have graced the tables of George's Restaurant is as long as it is distinguished including - Edward Heath, Matthew Le Tissier, Marion Pahars along with the other Saints players, Alan Ball (before his move!) Sue Pollard, Leo Mckern, Timothy West, former racing driver Derek Warwick, Nick Park of Wallace and 'Gromit' fame and Andrew Davies from 'Pride and Prejudice'. As one of the city's longest surviving privately owned restaurants enters it's second half century, they aim to offer what it's founder offered right from the very start - the very best.

West Quay Shopping Centre

Westquay (formerly WestQuay) is a shopping centre in Southampton, United Kingdom. It has an area of 800,000 square feet (70,000 m2) of retail space and contains around 130 shops, including major retailers such as Marks and Spencer, Zara, Schuh, Waterstone's, Hollister Co., Apple, and many more top brand names. It is situated in the city centre, close to the docks, with entrances on the main High Street (Above Bar Street), on Portland Terrace, through Waterstone's and on Harbour Parade, through the new (2016-2017) Westquay South. There is a built-in multi-storey car park with an entrance into the centre along with a 3 tier car park beneath. Building work began in 1997 as the former Daily Echo building and Pirelli Cable Works were demolished to make way for the centre. Westquay North was opened on 28 September 2000. The building is heated using geothermal energy, as is the civic centre. A centralised plant uses heat from an aquifer underground and then distributes it to the buildings in the city centre via a district heating scheme. In mid-May 2009 the first Hollister store to be opened outside of the extended London area opened in Westquay North; this is considered to be a major coup for Westquay as it reflects well on the strength of the retail offering available within Westquay.

Pickwell Farm Shop and Pick-Your-Own is located on the outskirts of Southampton and is a family run business established at this location since 1985. The pick and pay fields are open from 9am until 4.30pm 7 days a week and depending on the season offer rhubarb, strawberries, broad beans, black/redcurrants, courgettes, raspberries, blackberries, runner beans, french beans, sweetcorn (late August) and pumpkins (October). Please note that when in the pick and pay fields you will be crossing fields on a working farm, if it has been raining it will be muddy sensible footwear, enclosed toes, should be worn at all times. There are two bars, Sky and BT Sport, and their very own microbrewery where you can watch an eclectic range of beers being brewed. Also, with an open kitchen, you can watch the chefs prepare and cook your pizza in the stone bake oven. They have an amazing weekly line-up of events including a hugely popular Monday night quiz and ‘Sessions’ live music every Friday after work. You and your friends can also liven up your evening with ping pong, table football or pool. We’ve ate and drank here many times and have always really enjoyed it! The beers and cocktails were great and the pizzas are delicious! A fun spot in town to visit.

Duke of Wellington

The Duke of Wellington is a welcoming English Pub with real English Ales. Positioned in Southampton's historic Bugle Street, the award winning Duke of Wellington Pub has been a silent witness to many of the city's most famous events. The dark timbered building was originally built upon Norman vaults and cellars in 1220 and was first leased out to a Benedict Ace, one of the city's earliest mayors. During the great French raid of 1338 it was badly damaged but only required a repair job when other parts of the city were destroyed. In 1494 the building was for the first time converted into a public house after being bought by brewer Rowland Johnson who named it Bere House or Brew House. Johnson not only sold drink but also started brewing his own and subsequently set up the city's first brewery. Port books of the day record the importation of his brewing equipment and brewing hops from his native town in what is now Holland. In 1620 the pub would have been passed many times by the Pilgrim Fathers on their way to the Mayflower, which sailed its maiden voyage to the New World from the bottom of Bugle Street. By 1771 the pub was renamed the Shipwrights Arms serving the many local ship builders. After the Battle of Waterloo in June 1815, the owners of the pub celebrated by changing its name to that of the victorious Duke of Wellington who had become a national hero.

The Brushmakers Arms

This delightful village pub has undergone many a change of use in its 600-year history. At one time or another the Inn has been a factory, a school, doubled up as a dentist and a private house. The Inn is so called because way back in history, it catered for the needs of the travelling Brushmakers who used the vale of Upham as their base when they were not touring the countryside selling the brooms which they made from the hazel sticks from the green hedges of Hampshire. One of the regular guests at the Inn was a Mr Chickett; he was famous for the good quality of his brushes and it was known that he made a good living. One night while he lay in his bed above the Inn Mr Chickett chucked it…losing his life and his money. The murdering thief was never found, but Mr Chickett’s ghost keeps on searching, either for the money or the thief, haunting the low-ceilinged room where he had slept his last sleep. The village’s most famous resident was possibly the eighteenth-century poet and philosopher Edward young (1681-1765), born in the rectory, rector and author of ‘Night Thoughts’ illustrated by William Blake. I like to think he may have been in this very Inn when he penned “procrastination is the thief of time”. During the English civil war, sometime after the battle of Cheriton (1644), Oliver Cromwell put up at this Inn, used it as his headquarters, thumbed his maps and laid his plans for the roundhead advance on Winchester (1645). Not only to the seeker of haunted Inns, the Brushmakers Arms is a fascinating pub; it is a picturesque place with a slice of history all of its own. This is a great base for walking holidays for the Monarchs Way and the South Downs. There are many routes for walking dogs, rambling and cycling, with breath-taking views of the Hampshire countryside and Winchester Hill. Nicky and Reece own the pub and you can always be guaranteed a warm welcome and excellent food. With many years' experience of running excellent pubs and producing fantastic food, this really is a place not to be missed. They pride themselves on the quality of food and drink they offer and feature on the Square Meal website, Highly Commended as 2019 Regional Finalists by the Countryside Alliance and appear in the Good Pub Guide. Booking is recommended, especially at weekends, as they get very busy! Pop in for one of their famous Black Pudding Scotch Eggs, locally produced Pork Scratchings, sandwich, Ploughmans light lunch or evening meal with friends and family. They source local produce from local farms, food producers and grow herbs, vegetables and salad in their garden. All food that they serve has travelled no more than 10 miles to get here, and they always go organic and cook everything fresh every day. The real ales are delicious, sourced from local breweries and there's always a guest ale on offer. They also stock a wide range of gins, whiskies, spirits, wines, fine wines and soft drinks.

Calshot beach forms part of a mile long shingle spit which reaches out into the mouth of Southampton Water. From here you get a great view of the ships coming and going from one of the UK’s largest ports. The beach also offers panoramic views of the Solent, Southampton and the Isle of Wight so it is little wonder the beach is the site of a 16th century castle. Built in 1539 by Henry VIII, Calshot Castle is one of number of similar forts built to defend the south coast from the French and Spanish.

Hengistbury Head Beach

Roughly 27 miles from Southampton, Hengistbury Head is a relatively unspoilt and south-facing pebble and sand beach, with imposing clay and ironstone cliffs. At the less developed end is Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve, which separates Poole Bay and Christchurch Bay. There is plenty of parking as well as toilets and a cafe. It's about a 30-60 minute walk (depending on your fitness) from the carpark to the beach through beauiful scenery or they have a cute "land train" which takes you back and forth for a small fee.

Highcliffe Beach

Roughly 22 miles from Southampton, Highcliffe Beach is the most easterly beach in Dorset, sitting right on the border with Hampshire. A series of breakwaters help to create a sand and shingle beach that is popular with swimmers and surfers, particularly body boarders. Not in keeping with its name, Highcliffe is backed by grassy dunes, bushes, trees and low-rise cliffs. The dunes and shrublands behind the beach are criss-crossed with a number of paths and at the western end there is the Steamer Point Nature Reserve. From July to September there is a lifeguard service on the beach and the beach is cleaned daily during the high season and at regular intervals during the winter. Car-parking for just over 600 cars is available at the top of Highcliffe cliff, a pay car park, including disabled parking as well as a café (The Cliffhanger Café) and toilet and baby changing facilities. From here there is a rather steep path descending down onto the beach that makes disabled access difficult. However, there is a surfaced wheelchair route from Waterford Road to Chewton Glen. Pubs, restaurants, and shops can be found a few hundred meters away in the centre of the town of Highcliffe. The Dorset coastal path runs alongside the coast from nearby Chewton Bunny along to Mudeford Quay, providing a few miles of undisturbed paths for walkers to enjoy. This is by far our favourite local beach. The views from the beach and cliffs are stunning and we always have an amazing day here, highly recommended!
