Gourmet resturant, now part of the Relais Chateau chain, that if you believe in Michelin ratings is certainly the best restuarant in the region. Prices are as such more expensive than other restaurants suggested. The owners of L'Araignéé Gourmande noted here too, learnt their trade here over several years and provide a more inexpensive , more casual alternative closer to home.

Wine tasting. You are now in the southern part of Cote du Rhone, close to Chateauneuf de Pape which has its own appelation. And there are many many vineyards to visit for the enthusiasts follow the names of the areas you like best from Cairanne, Vacqueyras, Seguret, Gigondas, Rasteau and beyond. For the less experienced maybe just go to each town's co-operative wine seller, there you will get a less specialised wine perhaps but also possibly better value. And in this list I would now add Ventoux, which is based around Bedoin and who's wine has significantly improved in recent years

Truffles market normally every Saturday morning from November to March check before going that the truffles market is held. The town is charming and previously walled, if you go to church you see people giving their donation in truffles. The smell of truffles permeates everywhere and a few policemen are there to control the black market sales. One street with small quantities and the highest prices for the consumer, another street for the professionals and large quantities. In the town hall each Saturday a local charity offers a very inexpensively priced 3 course meal with the main course being something like truffle omelette and chips and the truffles are generously provided.

Sightseeing

Great views, interesting history all situated in a town that in itself merits visiting. A must for Napoleon fans.

In the time the Pope was a resident of Avignon, this was a walled city on the trade route between Spain and Italy. If you walk along la Grande Rue (which initially might seem rather an exaggerated name) you will see some surprisingly elegant house facades that date back to the rich shopkeepers living above their shopfront. If your French is up to it take in one of the occasional organised tours to learn more. Or if not just wander around the village and read some of the signs in French and English

Every Monday in season meet outside the town hall for a tour in French around the village that explains the history of various points of importance including the 12th century Church, the convent and ends with the eco-museum.

The style is similiar to Orpierre but bigger, with a central street that was on the trade route between Spain and Italy, be surprised by some of the magnificent and rich houses of the shopkeepers and the church. Climb above the town up past a small church in the hills above, and if you go further you reach an ancient Jewish cemetery and gain a beautiful panoramic view across the whole valley south. If you keep going to the top you will see also a panoramic view to the north. When coming back down zig zag through the small side streets that are also charming.

Great views but also in season this takes you into the interior where the more modest farms are and in particular where you will see many lavender fields, which flower in June to early July

Shopping

Every Thursday mornings all year there is an excellent Provencal market with the freshest fish, the best local cheeses, great vegetables, fruits, breads, honeys, olive oils, as well as in high season a range of artisan products. There is also a less charming part offering cheap clothing.

The best shopping is in Aix en Provence. But Sisteron does have a several charming arts shops and certainly the best of all is Le Crayon Gris, ostensibly its an artists supply shop but they have lots of other things and the best selection of postcards in the region, as well as a well stocked gallery of original art by local artists at very reasonable prices. Plus in the appartment above the main shop they have a workshop area where they hold art classes and where famously Napoleon slept on his return from Elba to Paris march. It was after his heavy lunch apparently, as he only had his siesta here. The name of the shop is Le Crayon Gris, Cecile is the owner and it is at 64 rue saunerie

Drinks & Nightlife

Bar in the village, that also offers food, music concerts sometimes in summer and has a nice outside terrace to take in the views. No parking problems and no drink drive issues. But there will be plenty of other places and events to go to around listed on the tourist office's diary.

Our area is not well served for nightlife apart from concerts and festivals during the tourist season. You need to go to Aix en Provence where there is a large list of night clubs, bars and activity for all ages and tastes in what is a very charming and historic city

You are already in the park as Lagrand is part of it. There are many walking trails all over, beautiful views, small rivers, high mountains, gorges, forests. Some directly out of the village, dependent on fitness and enthusiasm for height gains.

Arts & Culture

Most of the historical areas of interest have already been noted under sightseeing. However this point has been added as there are many festivals throughout the year, although mostly in summer. Look at bulletin boards and the tourist agency diary. Srres LezArts, is a wonderful arts festival in late September for 3 days with works of art displayed in pirvate places throughout Serres. Serres also has a jazz festival in June. Sisteron has a big arts festival with theatre, classical music, opera thoughout July and August with events always held in historical sites. Lagrand church events are a must purely because of the acoustics, etc et etc
