Pompeii was an ancient city located in the modern comune of Pompei near Naples in the Campania region of Italy. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area (e.g. at Boscoreale, Stabiae), was buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. Largely preserved under the ash, the excavated city offered a unique snapshot of Roman life, frozen at the moment it was buried, and an extraordinarily detailed insight into the everyday life of its inhabitants. Pompeii is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors annually.

Herculaneum was an ancient town, located in the modern-day comune of Ercolano, Campania, Italy. The city was destroyed and buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Like its neighbouring city Pompeii, Herculaneum is famous as one of the few ancient cities to be preserved more or less intact, with no later accretions or modifications. The thick layer of ash that blanketed the town also protected it against looting and the elements. Unlike Pompeii, the mainly pyroclastic material that covered Herculaneum carbonized and preserved more wood in objects such as roofs, beds, and doors, as well as other organic-based materials such as food and papyrus.

Dramatic, deluxe and more than a little dashing, Positano is the Amalfi Coast's front-cover splash, with vertiginous houses tumbling down to the sea in a cascade of sun-bleached peach, pink and terracotta. No less photo-worthy are its steep streets and steps, flanked by wisteria-draped hotels, smart restaurants and fashionable retailers.

Located directly across from the sea stacks of Capri, Ieranto Bay opens onto a natural scene of such beauty that the Sirens themselves chose it for their home. According to Pliny the Elder, it was precisely here that Ulysses encountered them on his way back to Ithaca, as recounted by Homer in the Odyssey – just one of the testimonies of how, since time immemorial, this enchanting tract of the Campanian coast has offered up beauty and inspiration, but also fruits and resources, thanks to its fecund earth and rich subsoil. The ancient agricultural tradition echoes in the indigenous techniques used for the cultivation of the citrus trees and in the terraces of olive trees, now given a new lease of life. The landscape also plays host to the defensive towers of Montalto and Campanella, which have borne witness to episodes of Saracen piracy. Significant marks have also been made on this land by the recent industrial past, associated with a limestone quarry that fell into disuse in the 1950s. Donated to FAI so that it would not be subject to the danger of speculation, the bay has undergone substantial environmental restoration interventions geared towards reinstating the original Mediterranean maquis: from rosemary to euphorbia and juniper. Today, Ieranto is recognised as a Site of Community Importance, and is included within the Marine Protected Area of Punta Campanella. Moreover, its high level of biodiversity makes it an ideal destination for those who like to come into contact with nature at its most untainted, also by engaging in stimulating, enjoyable experiences such as birdwatching, kayaking and snorkelling, as well as botanical strolls and even workshops for children.

Opposite Isca Islet, which belonged to Eduardo and Luca de Filippo, this enchanting fjord opens up between two imposing ridges at the base of which, almost fused in the rock, we find the structures of a Roman aqueduct and a series of picturesque “monazeni” used by the fishermen of Torca and S. Agata. Immediately upstream was a Benedictine abbey dedicated to St. Peter the Apostle, in memory of his landing on the coast of Campania. Today, on the ruins of the abbey, stands the chapel dedicated to him. Near the sacred area there is the stone steps of over six hundred steps leading upstream to La Guardia. The trail then continues along the Rivo Iarito and a little further on it forks towards Torca and S. Agata. On the opposite side, along the rocky slope of Monte di Torca, the viceregal tower stands out.

Mitigliano’s Cove (from the Latin Metellianum), renowned for its crystal clear sea and the fantastic panorama on the island of Capri, is bordered by the cliffs of the ridge that ends with Punta Baccoli. The beach, surrounded by large rocks and pebbles, is characterized by the presence of an ancient circular lime scale, used in the past for the production of lime. Characteristic geological formations (a submerged cave that creeps for over 150 meters, and emerges with a small natural arch) make this a natural unique place.

The small and ancient village on the border with Sorrento, consists mainly of fishermen’s houses with views of Mount Vesuvius. A marble column, belonging to the ancient villa of Pollio Felice, dominates the beach that at the time of the Romans was the scene of gymnastic games and is now the ideal place for children. The sandy beach has free areas and also houses several well-equipped bathing establishments, bars and restaurants. A short distance away, beyond the area of the limestone quarry, there is also a small cove with pebble beach: Il Portiglione, dominated by the ruins of another Roman villa, that of Capo Massa.

The Path of Gods links the tiny hilltop town of Agerola with Nocelle, a fraction of Positano nestled on the slopes of Monte Pertuso. The name of the footpath, The Path of the Gods, is an indication of the spectacular scenery enroute. Ideally, walkers should walk from Agerola to Nocelle, and not vice-versa; the route runs gently downhill from this direction, with magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast and the island of Capri.

The Fjord is the dominant element that characterized the coastal landscape. It is a deep scar into the rock, almost a dolomitic landscape, in stark contrast with the sea and the long sandy beach. In the past, a fishermen's village nestled above this cove, and during the XVII century, an unexpected industrial development brought about change. The icy waters of the torrent Schiato, hurtling down from the Monti Lattari behind the cove, powered the machinery of a paper mill and a public flour mill. Down the valley there is a "spandituro" or "drying room", used for drying the paper produced. Today it houses an Ecomuseum, with a herbarium and a historical and geographical trail about legumes and cereals. The two lateral ridges of the Vallone, which are about two hundred metres high, are criss-crossed by a network of pathways. Among them, the "Mad-Bat Path" is a botanical trail that is particularly useful to get to know the local Mediterranean scrub. The fishermen's village also houses the cinematic archive, "Museo Costa Diva - Le vie del cinema", an itinerary through film sets which have had the exceptional location of the 'Amalfi coast' (including the film Amore, directed by Roberto Rossellini, with Anna Magnani, while the two were having a passionate affair here).

Le Guide ai Quartieri

Noticeably detached from the main city and bereft of the hydrofoils and ferries that crowd Marina Piccola, this secluded former fishing village has a timeless maritime air not dissimilar to Marina Corricella on Procida. Bobbing fishing boats and pastel-coloured houses add character to a quarter that's known for its family-run seafood restaurants.

It was the beach of the famous Romantic Garden, the large and well-equipped campground throughout Europe so dear to the Genoese singer-songwriter, who was at home here, or to characters such as the artist Paolo Ricci, the surgeon Christian Barnard or the singer-songwriter Pino Guida. It can be accessed from Via Roncato through a private road and is a charming and charming place where the brilliance of the water blends with the dazzling reflection of overhanging rocks. Ample parking and equipped facilities are offered to the many swimmers who pour into this delightful cove.
