Sightseeing

Downtown Greenville provides lots of sites. Just come in good walking shoes and plan to check out what’s happening.
Asheville, of course, has the Biltmore Inn. If you do not plan to spend a full day there, the price is a bit steep to just check it out for a few hours. Instead, go spend a few hours at the Grove Park Inn. Its simple architecture belies the luxuriousness of the hotel and amenities. If you are there at lunch, enjoy your meal on the terrace. The Wicked Weed has great food and their beer is exported to restaurants in Greenville. Very kid-friendly offering grilled cheese on ciabatta bread. Sierra Nevada is probably the most famous of the breweries in the area. Check out the website for what is happening daily.

Before or after you go to Asheville, you will want to visit Flat Rock, which is about half-way between Greenville and Asheville. Flat Rock usually stays about 10 degrees cooler than Greenville, so it’s one of my favorite places when I am tired of the summer heat. If you have kids, Flat Rock is well worth the 30 minute or so drive to visit the goat farm at the Carl Sandberg House or check out Skytop Farm. Take in a quality play at the Flat Rock Playhouse. Before the theater, have lunch or supper at the local restaurants. The Flat Rock Village Bakery is fantastic. Not only are their baked goods devine, but they make a mean pizza. For you history buffs, check out the Carl Sandburg Home. The interior has recently been restored and Mr. Sandburg’s extensive library is now well preserved. On the premises, you will find the goat farm that every child will enjoy. There are lovely trails that even the kids can walk. Before you go to this national park, you want to pick up some food to enjoy a picnic on the tables close to the entrance. Flat Rock is cooler than Greenville, and the shade at this home and bring the temperature even lower. In the summer, you may even want to pack a sweater for evening. In late summer through Christmastime, you can visit Skytop Farm, where you can pick your own apples. They have a zillion free activities for the kiddos and a small fee for hayrides. You have to have at least one of their famous apple cider donuts. But why not wolf down a half-dozen? They are to die for. No kidding.

Swamp Rabbit Trail is a 22 mile rails to trails. Plan to shop at the Swamp Rabbit Café, which started as a place for bicyclists on the Trail to get some goodies. Now it provides healthy everything, including a restaurant and a grocery store with many homemade products. For the health conscientious this is the place to go. It’s a few minutes out of Downtown. While you are traveling north, you will want to check out Traveler’s Rest. Once a sleepy southern town turned artsy and quirky. Lots of cute shops and great restaurants. One of my favorites is Top Soil. You will want to walk the Swamp Rabbit Trail there or walk the lake at Furman University. Or you can rent bicycles and head back to the Swamp Rabbit Café.
