It was also the site of the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis on April 7, 1900. In 2000, a National Historical Institute marker was placed in the park. Near the park is the St. Augustine Cathedral and the Archbishop’s Palace.

Religious Landmark
Built in 1624 by Fray Agustin San Pedro (a.k.a. El Padre Capitan), both the church and convent were burned down in 1778. The church was rebuilt in 1780 but was burned down in 1831. In 1841, the church was rebuilt using concrete materials and was adorned with beautiful paintings of the four evangelists. A pipe organ was installed. The wooden cross which stands today in the front of the cathedral, was erected in 1888. In 1946, Archbishop James Hayes, SJ, rebuilt the cathedral and the convent. The stained glass, given by the New York Sacred Heart chapel, was also installed.

A 50-foot-tall statue of the Divine Mercy overlooking Macajalar Bay. Located in El Salvador, Misamis Oriental, it has quickly become a pilgrimage site for many Divine Mercy devotees and considered one of the most miraculous shrines in the country.
Best to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat especially if one wants to go to the top of the statue via the stairs.

The 'Sinuglaw' is a mix of two dishes: sinugba and kinilaw. Sinugba is grilled pork belly while kinilaw (ceviche-style) is raw fish, usually tuna, soaked in a mixture of vinegar and citrus juices. The kinilaw in Mindanao has a unique ingredient: tabon-tabon, a tropical fruit that grows in the wilderness of Mindanao.
