Heritage
More than 80% of the central city was destroyed in the the 2010/11 earthquakes. We lost a lot of our built history, our places - making the places that remain all the more special. These are some of them.
New Zealand’s largest collection of Category 1 heritage buildings. Once the University of Canterbury, the Arts Centre is now a place to eat, drink, and visit galleries. The Centre was significantly damaged in the 2010/11 earthquakes but its rebuild is now past the halfway point. There’s a Rollickin’ Gelato outlet there and also Lumiere, an amazing boutique cinema with a lovely cocktail bar. Sir Ernest Rutherford (the man who first split the atom) went to university there, and one of the Centre’s many attractions include a visit to his ‘den’ – a must-do for science/physics/astronomy fans.

The Promenade riverside walk was constructed post-earthquakes. It runs between Margaret Mahy playground in the east, to the Hospital/Hagley Park in the west (a little under 2km, end to end). Along the way you’ll see art, new buildings, restored heritage buildings, wildlife - it has it all!
