The Starlight bar/restaurant is the hub of Terlingua Ghostown. Open every day 5 p.m to 10 p.m. The food and ambiance are both great!. ( Steaks, salads, seafood, burgers, chicken fried antelope, etc) Full bar. Outdoor cantina open seasonally. Quality live music most nights starting about 6 p.m. PRO TIP! Get there when they open at 5 p.m.(or earlier), or * be prepared to wait* up to 3 hours during busy times. This place seats 100 people and packed just about every night, except in the summer months. You can wait for your table outside on the famous "Porch" that runs along the front of the Starlight and the Terlingua Trading Co. This is where folks gather to catch our often stunning sunsets that we view to the east here (the sunset reflects it's colors onto the Chisos mountains). This is also, where the talented locals and some famous non-locals gather to play music for fun at random times. The porch can be a very lively spot at times, but always a perfect spot to sit and relax and enjoy the views. You can get drinks from the Starlight bar and wait on the porch for your table, or you can go into the Trading company and purchase single beers to enjoy on the porch. You can act like a local and byob on the porch, just be discreet. Leave the ice chest in your vehicle :)

Bring your passport and take a day trip to the tiny village Boquillas del Carmen, Mexico! It's terribly safe and the port of entry is located in the national park. You don't show your passport until you get back. You walk about half mile from the parking lot down to the river where you will be taken via row boat (or you can walk across if the river is low enough) across the river for $5 roundtrip. Once on the other side, you can walk about a mile into town, or ride horse, donkey or in a truck for $5/$8 round trip. The locals do work for tips. The town is quaint and populated by about 200 people who thrive on business from the park to survive. If you can, please take items over for the school children in the village. They are grateful for this. There are two restaurants, both very good. Great views of the Sierra del Madre mountains from Jose Falcon's restaurant (left side of the street). There are several street vendors and little shops selling mostly handmade wares and souvenirs. There's also the "Park Bar". Modest accommodations available if you'd like to stay the night. You will scan your passport at a kiosk once back to the port of entry and speak to a border patrol agent on the phone who is stationed in El Paso. They will ask what you are bringing back and send you on your way. Please note, hours open: Wed to Sun 9 am to 4 pm., only.

The hot springs are a must do in the national park. During summer months, it's best to go very early morning or late night. It's about a 45 minute drive from Mel's Place. You can not drive down the gravel road to the hot springs (after turning off the hwy) in a long wheelbase truck. There are tight turns with a sheer rock cliff on one side. There is however, a parking area where you can hike (maybe 2 miles?) from to the hot springs. There's a sandy trail about half a mile to the springs. The spring itself is fairly small shallow flat bottom pool contained by stone walls. It hangs directly on the edge of the Rio Grande river with Mexico directly on the other side (just landscape, no homes or development of any kind in view). If you get too warm, just jump in the cold river! The hot springs can be crowded during holidays and busy times, so it can be best to go at non-peak hours. The water is a constant 105 degrees and filters back into the river, so it's always fresh water in the pool.
