Tourist Destinations

To get close to the falls visit the American side. For a panoramic view be sure to go to the Canadian side. Tourist highlights include Cave of the Winds, which provides an up close and personal experience of the falls, and the Maid of the Mist, a tour boat that can give you a full immersion experience (i.e., full force of the mist). On the American side be sure to visit Goat Island and Three Sisters Island. Go the the furthest point out on Three Sisters to find yourself adjacent to the rapids. Canadian side offers lots of shops, classic tourist experiences (Wax Museum, etc.) and gambling.

Yes, Buffalo is a port city. In fact, when the Erie Canal was thriving, Buffalo was one of the busiest inner ports in the world. As a key nexus between the farms in the mid-west and the rest of the world, it was said that Buffalo fed the world. A full day out could include a visit to the Naval Park, a walk around the Marina (be on the look out for the light house, one of Buffalo's oldest historic landmarks, and to walk up the observation deck at the end of the Marina), go kayaking or ride a water bike, walk along the foot path, view the old grain elevators, take a boat tour on the Miss Buffalo, view the terminus of the Erie Canal, and much more. Lots of options for food, including William K, a perfect venue to take in the setting sun of the Lake Erie coupled with artsy food choices or the Liberty Hound, a retro pub that sits on the water on the same property as the Naval Park.

Love art, check out the Burchfield Penney Art Center. Charles Burchfield was a famous local artist. Initially a designer for a wall paper company, Burchfield went on to become one of Buffalo's most famous artists. Known for his unique nature water colors, he also created some striking and muscular paintings of Buffalo during its manufacturing glory days. Housed in one of Buffalo's newest architectural gems (noted in the New York Times as one of the top 40 buildings in the US to visit), the Burchfield Penney collection also features other artists with a Western New York connection. Just across the street from the Albright Knox Art Gallery.

This 32 floor Art Deco building sits in the virtual epicenter of Buffalo. It's a masterpiece, with eye catching stained glass windows, friezes, and murals this site shouldn't be missed. However, be aware they have limited hours of operation. And if you get there, check out the observation deck which allows a 360 degree view of Buffalo and surrounding area. Now here's a real turn around story. Built in the 1800's as the Buffalo State Asylum for the Insane, is now a chic urban resort. This building, with its classic European style, remained vacant for more than 40 years. Striking from the outside as well as the interior. Wish to linger and soak up the atmosphere, stop into their restaurant or coffee shop.

One of Buffalo's true gems. The Darwin Martin House, carefully restored over the last several decades, showcases the architectural genius of one of America's great visionaries - Frank Lloyd Wright. Home of the Arts and Craft movement in the United States, the Roycroft Campus can't be missed. To step back into this period we encourage you to explore The Roycroft Inn, East Aurora, New York (30 minutes by car from Buffalo). This grand old theatre is simply spectacular. Shea's opened its doors in 1926. Originally as a movie house, later the stage was graced by such entertainers as Bob Hope, George Burns and Frank Sinatra. Today the program features Broadway Musicals. Shea's was designed in the style of European opera houses. With its Baroque and Rococo styles, your jaw will drop from the moment you enter the lobby and will drop even further, likely to hit the floor, when you take in the large dome in the main theatre.

You love mid-century furniture and vintage artistic decor (along with the quirky), check out CooCooU. This is where we purchased most of the furniture for Buffalo 180. Michael, the proprietor, worked closely with us making recommendations with regard to pieces and staging. Like going to a museum. If you like the mid-century aesthetics this is the best collection in Buffalo. Huge showroom with an even larger warehouse. Tastefully curated, no prices displayed as Michael has everything committed to memory. Musician turned collector, Michael is a joy to speak with.

Located in Chestnut Ridge Park, this short hike leads you to a lovely little waterfall complete with an eternal flame. Yes, a natural gas seep that has been lit and stays lit throughout the year. And what makes this truly spectacular is the fact that this flame sits at the base of the waterfalls and in fact, depending on the flow of the water, can be partially obscured by the falls. Round trip walk, with some vigorous climbs, takes about an hour to 90 minutes (depending on how long you linger at the flame). Roughly a 45 minute drive from Buffalo 180.

America's queen of comedy, Lucille Ball, hailed from the Western New York Region. As a tribute to her home town, a national museum has been established the Lucy Desi Museum. A center to celebrate comedy, there are exhibits and shows year round. Seriously, need a good laugh, thought it's off the beaten path, it's worth the trip. Gerard worked here one summer, not a reason to visit, but if you are into the performing arts this might be on your list of things to do. Founded in 1874 this small residential community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake is a haven for artists and free thinkers. As their mission states: with symphony, opera, theater, dance, visual arts, and a renowned music school, Chautauqua produces an elective mix of programming that can be found nowhere else in the world. Open only in the summer, this gated community makes a variety of passes available to patrons and tourists. About 90 minute car ride from Buffalo 180. Sampling of Some of the Neighborhood Restaurants

When you arrive to Buffalo 180 you will find a customized review of neighborhood restaurants, but just to get you salivating here are a few examples.
Disclaimer from the start, we’re going to gush about this restaurant. This is a lovely little restaurant with a intimate bar. Warm interior with romantic nooks for two and tables that can accommodate families. Dining alone, try the seating at the bar. Outdoor patio for warm weather, with an ample number of tables you won’t feel crammed up against a building. Farm-to-table, food is fresh and tasty. Due to constant intake of fresh ingredients menu changes regularly, sometimes three times in a week. Menu leans towards Italian, with pastas and pizzas, but not exclusively. Super accommodating, they will make any dish to order. Open for lunch and dinners, as well as Sunday brunch. Creative cuisine served up by chefs who are artists. Are we gushing, yes we are. We love this restaurant.

Authentic Italian. Really, this is not a cliché Italian restaurant. It’s so genuine you would swear you were actually in Italy. The pizza is amazing – just like the old country. Thin crust personal size pizza (though large enough for two small appetites to share), with the traditional Italian choices (Margherita, Portobello, Quattro Formaggi, and more). Of note, is there Pepperoni and Mozzarella pizza that won the Western New York pizza showdown. Great range of pastas. First rate ingredients, nice atmosphere, and high quality food. Want a little piece of Italy, Romeo and Juliet’s is your place. Gluten free, there are limited array of options including salads, stuffed peppers and some seafood. Oh, and if you crave sweets you will absolutely drool looking at their case of baked goods (Italian cookies, cakes, cannoli, bread and more).

The New Jewel of India is a hidden gem of culinary pleasures that more people simply need to discover. Family owned, and operated, this team effort serves up hearty dishes likely to bring you back again and again. Few cuisines can match the pleasant aromatic effects of Indian food. And few Indian restaurants can match the breadth of options available at the New Jewel of India. Be sure to kick off this culinary adventure with one of their savory starters. For main dishes you have the full range of house specials, chicken, beef, seafood, lamb, and vegetarian. And for a bonus, they also offer up special tofu dishes. Of course you can’t go Indian without bread as a side and this place has all the classics, naan, paratha, bhatura, and more. Almost every category on the menu is introduced by the word “Special.” And it’s no lie, most everything served is truly special.

One of our favorite breakfast places (rumored to have been voted best breakfast in Buffalo). A visit is like traveling back in time. This cash only restaurant, which says a lot right there, provides an authentic 1950’s diner experience. Complete with black and white tile floors, swivel stools for seating at the counter, and little booths (red seats of course), it’s like visiting a by-gone era. Tiny but packed with character and characters. Traditional breakfast, eggs, waffles and gigantic pancakes, with healthy options for those so inclined. Time-honored diner fare available for lunch as well. Open only for breakfast and lunch, with limited hours you better be good and they are! Sometimes there’s a line, they have their fans, but if your looking for great value it’s worth the wait. If you can get it, grab the table at the front of the diner. It provides a window view onto Hertel Ave. on one side, and the complete diner on the other.
