The Food Scene

There are a number of nice restaurants to choose from, quite a few in walking distance. We have highlighted a few here, which belong to some of our favorites in the area.
Quirky, charming and consistently delicious ! From simple local cuisine to regional specialties, with a very nice wine and dessert list, this has been a family favorite for over 20 years, but it has been around for much longer than that! Choose between the tables in the barn, the music room upstairs, the old-world dining rooms, or the covered courtyard. Reservations are highly recommended any time of the week! A warm atmosphere, friendly service and German cuisine await you here, and it is only about a 10-minute walk away. In the summer there is also an outdoor dining terrace, across from the historic townhall. The historical house is located in the city center, which invites you to stroll through the old alleys.

Like bouldering or just hiking through the forest? Visit the Felsenmeer, where you can still see how the Romans chiseled columns out of the rock, climb the rocks up or down, and if you make it all the way to the top of the hill, you will have a view over the Frankfurt skyline (depending on weather).

Arts & Culture

The former Monastery Lorsch was once one of the most important religious centers in the early-medieval times. Founded in the 8th century it weathered many tumultuous times, abbots, kings, and wars, until finally destroyed by the Spanish in during the 30-year war in 1621. However, the "Kingshall" still survives and is the architectural highlight of this UNESCO World Heritage site. This beautiful building featuring its world-renowned colorful sandstone façade, is one of the few well-preserved buildings from the Carolingian age and together with the adjacent museum, and early-medieval settlement recreation, well worth a visit and tour! There is also the re-creation of an early medieval village called “Lauresham”, where you can explore how people used to live and work back then, as well as look at some livestock that is being "turned back" into the breeds of medieval times.

Entertainment & Activities

The annual wine festival is one of the highlights on the Bergstrasse, or as the Romans called it the "Strata Montana". It is also the largest on the Bergstrasse and takes place every year at the beginning of September. This is the perfect place to be for everyone who likes wine, local foods and having a good time!

This beautiful little restaurant with its large "Bier - or Weingarten" has some of the best views in the area! This is the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine (excellent fruit wines as well) on a sunny day. This is also the "half-way-spot" of the annual vinyard tour, that starts in Zwingenberg and ends in Heppenheim (or vice versa), every May 1st - rain or shine! This annual wine "pilgrimage" attracts young and old in the thousands from the local towns and far away (a lot of English can be heard). This is also a national holiday and provides a great tour through vinyards and towns, with lots of wine tasting opportunities on the way.
