In 1957 Marken was an Island in the Gouwzee. In 1991 Marken belongs to the munacipality waterland in the dutch province of Northern Holland. There are proximatley 1800 people and its known throughout the world for its unique monumental wooden houses narrow streets, fishing harbour and colourfull costumes. This is now a major tourist attraction.
