Sightseeing

Navarrenx is a fine example of the bastides found all across the South West of France. This pretty little town, over looking the Gave d’Oloron was awarded prestigious Plus Beau Village status in 2014. Since the Middle Ages has been a resting place for pilgrims travelling to Saint Jacques de Compostella (Camino de Santiago). It is home to many artisans, potters and painters not to mention a micro brewery. Navarrenx has a choice of cafes and restaurants and is only a short drive away

With more than 2000 years of history Oloron Sainte-Marie is the oldest Bearnaise city of importance since Roman times. It is situated where the Gaves Aspe and Ossau merge to become the Gave d’Oloron. Originally two separate towns, Oloron and Sainte-Marie, which were unified in 1858 by the Empress Eugenie. Today you can explore it following one of the heritage trails and if you buy a ‘wristwatch’ from the Tourist Office, you can listen to brief commentaries at each of the terminals along your chosen route. In the medieval quartier St Croix, you will find Tour de Grède, dating from the late 12th to early 16th centuries. From the tower you will get a 360° panoramic view over the city
