A good place to relax, enjoy your coffee and cauliflower salad :) It's on the main street downtown, gives you a chance to feel the city and its atmosphere.

For a late-night drink go to Meat Market cocktail bar. Bloody-Mary there, is the mother of all the Mary´s :))) They also have some pretty tasty non-alcoholic cocktails.

Sightseeing

The Estonian National Museum in Tartu, with its 6000 square metres of exhibition space, is the biggest in Estonia. "Through the Museum’s exhibitions and events, one can take a look at Estonians’ everyday lives in different periods. Interactive displays offer hands-on experience; it is possible to observe what an Estonian home looks like, explore Estonian cuisine and make oneself familiar with local dress, language and customs. Attention is also paid to the cultures of other nations, especially those of the Finno-Ugric peoples. To complement the programme, the Museum organises also film nights, musical events and workshops in handicrafts, traditional design and traditional tools. Guides provide museum tours, but also special programs, including family days on the theme of Estonian folk culture and the folk calendar, they also help to arrange a birthday party for visitors in all ages." https://www.erm.ee/en/museum

Behind the town hall Lossi Street takes you to Toome Hill (Toomemägi). It is a historically important place in the centre of Tartu. The park on the hill is an oasis of calmness and nature in the middle of the city. Buildings that were formerly used for military purposes now belong to the university. Lossi Street separates Toome Hill in two. Two bridges that are situated above connect the eastern and western area of the hill, which is very practical because everything is always within reach. The western part of the hill is clearly dominated by the ruins of the 13th-century cathedral (Toomkirik) that has been decaying since the Livonian War (1558-1583). The sanctuary, which is still in a quite good condition today, accommodates the University’s history museum. Here, you can get a broad overview of academic research and teaching in Tartu. Ruins of Tartu Cathedral Ruins of Tartu Cathedral. The ruins have been secured and restored in some places. Visitors can climb to a viewing platform on top of the cathedral and will be rewarded with a lovely panoramic view of a large part of Tartu. In the eastern part of the public park you will find the Old Anatomical Theatre (Vana anatoomikum) and the time-honoured Observatory (Tähetorn), which was the most modern one in Europe in the 19th century.

Upside Down House is a dizzying adventure for everybody – grown-ups and children. They literally have turned the house upside down. Upstairs is downstairs and vice versa. All the things like sofas, kitchen cabinets and everything else, that you usually see on the floor, hang from the ceiling in the Upside Down House. Actually, they are still on the floor, but the floor is the ceiling and the ceiling is the floor and as a matter of fact, it is you, who is upside down. If you got confused, then come and see for yourself, that everything you have just read is true. Just a stone’s throw away from Estonian National Museum (ERM).
