Nice bread and lots of cakes :-) A local speciality is the cake: "jødekage" (it is a very political uncorrect name, but that is what it is called). It is a cake which the Danes eat at breakfirst after having bread with cheese. It comes in two variants: the one with nuts on the top and one with icing. I prefer the one with nuts. If you really want to go Danish, ask for the dark bread "rugbrød", you can ask the shop to cut in slices for you, we prefer it to be quiet thick and ask for 1 cm slices. Enjoy with any type of toping.

Be aware, that I last visited in 2016, so things might have changed. But for me, a trip to Lønstrup is a must do. It is an old fishermans' town and eventhough, visited by a lot of tourits it has remained with is own charm. There are a lot of craftman ships - visit the shop by Glashuset, where you can see glass being made. If you want to buy a souvenir, buy it here. They also have second class products - it is products with minor flaws and we have 10 glasses from here most of them second class and they are very good. We go for lunch or buy a coffee with cake. Normally, we will enjoy to visit Lønstrup by foot - we will have walked from the cottage to Lønstrup, it is a 13-14 km by the coast. If you walk remember to check the weather report - and wind from the North is recommendable. If you can afford it, I would recommend for you to take a taxi back. It is roughly 450-600 DKK. You can also go by public transport - it is easy and I have done it, but it will take about 1,5 hours. If you drive by car to Lønstrup - do visit "Maarup Kirke" (Maarup church) and walk to "Rubjerg Fyret" (Rubjerg light house) it is a 5 km return walk.

Parks & Nature

This area is quiet and you can go for a wonderful walk. When the weather is very fresh it can be nice to walk by the trees. The terrain varies with hills an flat areas - do as the Danes and bring your own lunch bag and coffee. For inspiration for one of the walks https://www.alltrails.com/trail/denmark/north-denmark/tornby-klitplantage

Skagen is the Northen part of Denmark. And you can go for lunch or you can plan a whole day here. For us, a day trip could be as follows: "Råbjerg Mile" (sand park), Grenen (the Northen part where the two seas meet") lunch in Skagen, visit "Skagens Museum" to see the world famous Skagen pantings. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skagen

Fish

When we are at Hirtshals, we eat a lot of fish, unfortunately the situation is a bit uncertain. In Hirtshals, there is a shop at the harbor, the service is not great, and the fish expensive, but they taste very nice ;) http://www.gaardboesfisk.dk The address is Norgeskajen 10 The ordinary supermarkets in Hirtshals have some fish – I would go with SuperBrugsen. It is on the main street. I know that some smaller fishermen sell fish at the harbor – contact the tourist information: Jørgen Fibigersgade 26 (it is at the big building at the parking lot close by Netto) Tlf. +45 9894 2220 www.visithirtshals.dk If you go to Hjørring, there is a shop at. I does not have the greatest service – but nice fish: http://byensfiskebutik.dk The address is Nørregade 30 Or, not as authentic, but Menu in Hjørring has a very good and very nice selection of fish mainly landed in Hirtshals: Frederikshavnsvej 42 We shop there a lot, it is a more pricy supermarket but has high quality produce of fish, veggies, meat and cheeses. Try the 'rødspættefilet' - wisp a raw egg together put the fish in at both sides turn to the next plate with ‘rasp’ (add salt and peber) and turn on both sides. Fry it on a pan turned on very high temperature and serve on ryebread with Danish ‘remoulade’ and lemon juice. You can but the rasp and remoulade at SuperBrugsen in Hirtshals.
Average super market with all the things you need. During Summer it's openings hours are 8am until 10 pm. Be aware that there are many shopping possibilities in Hirtshals

1,5 km along the beach. If you walk to the beach and turn left you will find a road by the life guard and here is this local grosery. It has ordinary products, local fruit and veggies, newspapers (German and Danish). Returning, you can walk in the dowes follow the sign "badesti" and walk on Peder Munksvej and follow it North and to the left.

An old town with a nice atmosphere, if you want to go to a larger town with larger shopping facilities go here.

Eagle world

https://eagleworld.dk We went in 2020 and is an 3-4 star experience - I think I expect to much. But you will se amazing birds and horse agility. It normally has two shows a day - you can buy tickets in advance
Walk from the cottage to Hirtshals by the huge hotel take the steps and you will be by the museum. During the second world war, the Germans made these military installations to watch the sea way. It is fascinating to watch. If the weather is nice - do go to the light house with the outstanding views.
