Hiking
Hurricane Ridge, nearly a mile high, offers great hiking with many hiking trails from which to choose. Recommend you start at the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center where exhibits, orientation movie, and restrooms are available year-round. The information desk is staffed in the summer and on the weekends from late December to late March. During summer season, a hike to Hurricane Hill on a clear day can offer a 360-degree view, north across the Straits of Juan de Fuca to Victoria, Canada or the southern view of the glacier clad Mount Olympus. While walking the hiking trail view sub-alpine flowers like lupine, Indian Paintbrush and avalanche lilies. Be listening for the whistle of a marmot, which are frequently seen and heard in this northwest Washington area. Whistle back to the marmot and he will whistle back to you.

The trail to Sol Duc Falls begins beyond the Sol Duc Hot Springs and Resort, at the end of the road. From the trailhead, follow the wide, well-maintained path through the forest. The route is family friendly and pleasant, wandering beneath a dense forest canopy and among every shade of green. Cross a small stream on a bridge, pausing to enjoy the water tumbling over moss-covered rocks. Sol Duc Falls announces itself with a roar prior to coming into view. At 0.8 mile arrive at a historic shelter and waterfall. Depending on water volume, Sol Duc Falls splits into as many as four channels as it cascades 48 feet into a narrow, rocky canyon. There are various viewpoints of the waterfall, both upstream and down—as well as on the bridge that crosses the river.

Near the shores of Lake Crescent, depart from the Storm King Ranger Station on a paved path and continue through the old-growth forest for 0.5 miles to a junction. At the junction, follow the left path, continuing upstream under a towering green canopy of conifers and maples. Sword ferns and carpets of moss line the wide, well-maintained trail. Shortly beyond the Mount Storm King Trail junction, head right towards Marymere Falls. The trail crosses Barnes Creek and then Falls Creek before ascending 200 feet into the mossy, fern-laden ravine. Here the trail forms a loop, offering two viewpoints of the 90-foot-high waterfall.

This teardrop-shaped 20-acre lake, filling a deep glacial cirque, is one of the largest alpine lakes in the Olympics. At the center of the lake, an island sits amid the emerald waters as cascades stream down the surrounding rocky walls, making for an idyllic hiking getaway. Just a few miles from Olympic’s Heart O’ the Hills Campground, the Lake Angeles Trail steadily climbs 2,300 feet in 3.5 miles. The well-worn path starts on a moderate grade and travels through shaded second-growth forest. As you climb, the trail crosses a footbridge over Ennis Creek and continues climbing the divide between the Ennis and Lake Creek drainages. Above Ennis Creek the forest grows considerably drier, and vegetation starts giving way to mosses, rock and stunted alpine vegetation. The grade levels near a pond and large meadow. This is a good place to catch your breath and watch for black-tailed deer and ruffed grouse. Arriving at the lake, views of Klahhane Ridge and Mount Angeles tower high overhead.

Enjoy this paved trail, ending at the beautiful Madison Falls. Easily accessible, the trailhead starts right after you enter through the park. Follow a trail that bends around the trees, and stop at the wooden rail to view the creek through the branches, and continue to the falls. Benches sit at the very end, to watch the water tumble down.

To begin the Hoh River Trail, walk to the right of the visitor center. There is a dense network of short nature trails leaving from the parking area; however, you just need to follow signs for the Hoh River Trail. Soon you will escape the nature trails and pass the large sign for the Hoh River Trail, which helpfully shows distances for all of the destinations along it. You will trek through the incredibly dense, classic Pacific Northwest temperate rainforest (also called Hoh Rainforest) for the entirety of the trail. The first 1.6km or so is always the most impressive. From the humongous trees and bushes, to the ‘Old Man’s Beard’ and moss hanging off every branch, it feels like you’re walking through a fairy tale.
