This is one of the first streets to go "Portland". It sort of used to be more mundane; carpeting, finance companies, locksmith, etc. Venerable Hawthorne Blvd. is full of vintage, small local shops and tons of places to eat. Good breakfast places; try the waffle window for lands sake on the side of Bread and Ink. Try Blue Star Donuts and El Cubo de Cuba has awesome cuban food. The usual array of tattoo, piercings, vape/smoke, beer and coffee places. The interesting part starts at 50th and goes to 12th. The good thing about Hawthorne is that the bus is a few blocks away on Foster and goes right there. It runs about every 15 minutes. The ride takes about 15 minutes by bus or car.

This street has really come along way in the last 20 years. In the early 2000's there was an interesting lightbulb place and cool plant nursery. Part of this neighborhood is named Nob Hill after the San Francisco Nob Hill. In the 1800's when the SF Nob Hill was named, nob meant 'a person of position'. But on the other end of this street is a neighborhood called Slabtown referring to the slabs of wood left for the working class to heat their homes etc. No matter how close the working class was to 'people of position' back then, it's all sort of high end now. However, if you look, you may find good deals on jewelry and occasionally clothing. Very fun to walk around. Try the cool streetcar. The fun starts at Burnside and goes to Thurman and 25th. Also try the amusing 21st Av. from Burnside to Lovejoy. About a 30-45 minute drive.

This Northwest neighborhood used to be the warehouse district. It always had a brewery, Weinhard's, but when that closed other beers moved in the neighborhood. Luckily the old brewery building didn't get torn down and are now known as the brewery blocks. Iconic Powell's Books is nearby. A whole city block of books. Also, it has a handy coffee shop. Try Kenny and Zuke's Deli-so good. This area has been used for the TV shows Grimm and Leverage among others. Lots of great places to eat and shop of course. The pleasant streetcar goes through this neighborhood on it's way to either downtown or NW 23rd; both worthwhile destinations. Bordered (roughly) by Burnside, NW 15th, Northrup and Broadway.

The Portland Aerial Tram is a great way to view the city if you're not terrified of heights. It's 500 feet high, which is insane. The downtown skyline, the river and neighborhoods are all visable. Tickets $4.55 cash round trip at the Lovejoy Bakery during their business hours at the lower end of the tram. There are cafes near the upper tram. The tram operates their "cabins" as they're called about every 6 minutes and the ride takes about 4 minutes. 5:30am-9:30pm weekdays, 9-5 Saturdays and closed on Sundays. Closed most major holidays. The Waterfront Loop consists basically of 2 bridges and 2 paths along the Willamette River near downtown. The Loop can be longer or shorter depending on time and energy. It's about 6 miles and has art and nature installations. The eastside Esplanade has great views of the city skyline and has the longest floating walkway in the country. The thoughtful Tilicum Bridge is the only one in the country not built for cars. The Aerial Tram is on the downtown side. The Rail Museum on the eastside. The steel bridge is the 2nd oldest vertical lift bridge in the country and the lower level is just for people. The downtown side Tom McCall path goes along the Saturday Market and Oldtown Chinatown.

Parks & Nature
Not sure if Mt. Hood is a park or not but it sure is a mountain. Timberline Lodge was built in the 30's by the Works Progress Administration. The facade was featured in "The Shining". The decor inside is fascinating, woodsy and classic. The massive fireplace is over the top. Also there's a restaurant. Good for picnics in the warmer months. Interesting mountain flowers in the spring. About a 1-2 hour drive depending on traffic.

Why see this rock? Because it's there. You have to see it to believe it. Apparently it's a lava formation. A huuuge lava formation. An unbelievably stunning beach. If you have the time, go go go! A little under 2 hour drive from Portland.

This is cool to see at high tide so get to know the tide table for Devils Punchbowl and go then. Let's just say lots of rushing water and interesting rock formations make for great scenery. On highway 101 on the coast between Lincoln City and Newport. A little under 3 hour drive.

Technically this water/rock formation is located in a National forest but it's on the coast 101 highway between Newport and Florence. Go at high tide. It's incredible to see in person. A little over 3 hour drive time from Portland. Worth it.

This is some kind of ecological desination type place. There's a fee by carload to get in but so worth it. The "beach" consists of perfectly formed round black balls that were lava bubbles from millions of years ago. Don't take any of the lava balls! It's literally a federal offense. There's park rangers watching. This is the most bizarre "beach" you'll ever visit. Can be difficult to walk on though and tons of stairs going down to beach. Also there are unbelievable tidepools with colorful starfish, sea urchins and anemones. Bring rubber boots! More accessible is the lighthouse with a spectacular view of the ocean. You might even see spouting migrating whales! About a 3 hour drive.

This 620 foot breathtaking double waterfall with paths and trails is a must-see. Great foto ops. Snack bar and cool lodge restaurant. Parking can be a drag in the warmer months. If you take the Scenic Gorge Highway exit at Troutdale instead of 84 the whole way you'll pass by smaller waterfalls close up to the road and also Crown Point Vista House. It looks a like part of a little castle tower. Built decades ago, it has great sweeping views of the Columbia river gorge. You can see for miles. Try to go when it's not super cloudy and of course raining. About an hours drive from Portland without stops.

Why go here? Because it got blowed up real good in 1980. If you go, you'll see how obvious the blast site still is. The area around the blast site is still "healing". The Johnson Ridge Observatory interpretive center at the blast site is awesome. The continuously running explanation film is dramatic and informative. $8 adults. There's great paths at the blast site and at the base of the mountain where there's also an interpretive center, The Mt. St. Helens Visitor Center, $5 adults, $2.50 7-17, under 7 free. Varied hours seasonally for both. Better in warmer months. 2 hour drive. mountsthelens.com
