Holyrood Park is a short walk from Edinburgh’s Royal Mile in the heart of the city. It is a 640 acre Royal Park adjacent to Holyrood Palace. The parks highest point is Arthurs Seat, an ancient volcano, and sits 251m above sea level giving excellent view of the city; it is also the site of a large and well preserved fort. This is one of four hill forts dating from around 2000 years ago. With its diverse range of flora and geology it is also site of Special Scientific Interest. Within the park you can also visit St Anthony’s Chapel - a 15th century medieval chapel, Salisbury Crags – a series of 150 foot cliff faces dominating Edinburgh’s skyline as well as Duddingston Loch – a fresh water loch

Catalonian architect Enric Miralles’ controversial but award-winning building at the bottom of The Royal Mile will always start a debate. You can buy parliamentary shortbread in the gift shop or have a coffee while playing spot the politician in the Parliament Café. There is a permanent exhibition about the Scottish Parliament, free guided tours (booking recommended) are on offer, and, if you are keen to see politics in action, you can book tickets to attend committee meetings or debates. Possibilities are complicated by whether or not Parliament is sitting, so it is best to check the website if you are planning a visit.

Founded as a monastery in 1128, the Palace of Holyrood House is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. The Palace as it stands today was built in the 17th century. It is closely associated with Scotland’s turbulent past and was home to Mary Queen of Scots. Today it is the setting for state ceremonies and the Queen spends one week in residence each summer. Great tours of the Palace are available.

This place does amazing breakfasts and cakes, we think they are the best in our area! The veggie breakfast is exceptionally good! Make sure to book ahead because this place gets busy especially at the weekend. We can do this for you if you want! The cakes are amazing too and they do traditional afternoon tea (cakes and sandwiches).

This recently refurbished but still appealingly eccentric palace of wonder is a mad dash through the history of the world and everything in it — both natural and man-made. More than 800 objects make up the mind-boggling installation that is the Window on the World in the Grand Gallery, but I always first pay a visit to the utterly charming, completely barmy Lewis Chessmen. There are interactive galleries to keep children of all ages happy, free tours and Family Footprint Trails to make exploration more exciting. When it all gets a bit much, stop for a giant scone in the Balcony Café, treat yourself to lunch or tea in the glamorous (and correspondingly pricey) rooftop Tower Restaurant
