Shops (and coffee)

Easily one of the best little shops in the area. Scandinavian/ Japanese vibe with MOMA-like gifts at a variety of price points. I can always find a gift for someone (or myself) there.

I'm off the sugar at the moment, but I've heard the hot chocolate here (and other treats) are phenomenal. Plus a great looking space.

This is one of the best burgers I've ever had in my life. Fries are great too. There are a few tables but really a take-out spot. Get them to go and go eat down by the river at Long Dock Park.

The Roundhouse is located all the way on the other end of Beacon's Main Street (walk towards the mountain), it's a nice 20 min walk from the house. The thing that makes this place lovely is the outdoor seating area. The service can take some patience - Beacon is not NYC :) In terms of food, I tend to stick to the simplest/ most basic dishes.

I haven't been but it looks intriguing: "The Kitchen Sink Supper Club is a dinner experience serving Chef Brian Arnoff’s rotating tasting menu. Themed with local ingredients, spices or nose-to-tail dining, our menus rotate regularly - with an optional beverage pairing - for a fixed-price dinner service in our communal style dining room, most Friday and Saturday evenings." Reservations required.

I love an old school slightly mafioso style Italian restaurant. I haven't been in a while but this is definitely one of the most authentic places in the area, interesting menu and old school ambiance. If you're into that type of thing (which I am).

Wine/ Breweries

I've heard this is great - Millbrook has some beautiful farmland and the town of Millbrook is really charming and has some nice shops and a couple worthwhile restaurants.
I've never been here myself, but I've seen it from across the river and I hear it is lovely and has a nice view. If you want to go for a wine tasting, their website suggests making reservations (which you can do online).

There are numerous breweries/ beer halls right in Beacon, but Obercreek (a 15 minute drive away in Wappingers Falls) is my favorite for the rustic, off the beaten path ambiance and excellent beer. Obercreek is also a farm and you can visit their farm-stand (a short drive away on the other side of the property).

I've never actually had a cocktail here because of food restrictions I have but I've had a glass of wine and I think they did a really nice job on the interior. Also one of the only bars in town that seems to understand that if you cut the lights by 50% it makes the ambiance better by at least 50%

Despite its relatively short length, this is generally considered to be the most strenuous hike in the East Hudson Highlands. It involves steep climbs over rock ledges that can be very slippery when wet. You'll need to use both your hands and your feet in many places along the way. Proper footgear is essential for this hike, which is best done on weekdays, to avoid the crowds on weekends. Do not attempt this hike in wet weather, or if the trail is covered with snow or ice. The white-blazed Breakneck Ridge Trail starts on the west side of Route 9D, just north of the tunnel, and heads south, almost immediately reaching a viewpoint over the Hudson River from a rock outcrop to the right of the trail. Bannerman’s Castle on Pollopel Island is visible to the north, and Storm King Mountain, directly across the river, may be seen through the trees

Nature & Gardens

Perched in a dramatic setting in the Hudson Highlands, just sixty miles north of New York City, Stonecrop’s mission is to inspire gardeners to explore the infinite variety of the plant kingdom and to encourage a joyful willingness to experiment in the garden. A visit to Stonecrop is a serious immersion in plants and design ideas. Plan to spend several hours with a plant list in hand. Some of the highlights include raised alpine stone beds and a cliff rock garden; woodland and water gardens; an enclosed English-style flower garden and systematic order beds representing over 50 plant families. A 2,000 square-foot conservatory housing tender specimens floats on a pond near the entry. Display greenhouses of alpines, tropicals, and succulents are backed up by a T-Range Greenhouse used to over-winter half-hardy plants. In season, these are adroitly mixed with annuals, hardy perennials, shrubs and vines to create a rich display in the flower garden. Inspiration may be found in all seasons, from the spring show of bulbs and the explosion of colour on the cliff ledge, to summer’s profusion in the flower garden, and the subtleties of fall foliage and fruit throughout the garden.

Boscobel opened as a nonprofit museum sixty years ago. Built between 1804 and 1808, it was originally the dream house of wealthy Loyalists. By the 1950s, after falling into disrepair, it was demolished. Preservationists saved as many architectural fragments as possible and reassembled them fifteen miles north, where the Neoclassical mansion was restored back to—and even beyond—its original grandeur. Boscobel was saved as a beautiful piece of art. Now an esteemed Historic House Museum containing one of the finest collections of decorative arts from the Federal period, Boscobel offers admission to 68 acres of our grounds, featuring lush gardens and a woodland trail. Located in the heart of the Hudson Valley, Boscobel directly overlooks Constitution Marsh toward the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, showcasing dramatic views of the Hudson River. Check out their website for events and guided tours.
