Sightseeing

If like me you love the Brontë’s and their writings, then a visit to Haworths most famous house is a must. The period rooms are full of the families possessions and the museums exhibition tells of their lives and the creation of their famous works of literature.

If you’ve ever seen the film The Railway Children (part of my childhood every Christmas) then you must try and take a ride on the Worth Valley Steam Railway. It’s so atmospheric and wonderfully reminiscent of a bygone age.

Any Brontë fan coming to Haworth will want to walk to the farm which was inspiration for Emily’s ‘Wuthering Heights’. It can be walked from the cottage if you make your way up the cobbles and walk past the church. Then follow the signs to Pennistone Hill and keep following them to Brontë waterfall and Top Withens beyond. Sturdy footwear required and do take water and snacks.

When you think you’ve seen all that Haworth has to offer (it could take a while) why not head over to our local World Heritage site, Saltaire. The village is fascinating and the mill, in the centre is now a gallery hosting one of our local famous sons, David Hockneys work, an eating venue and independent shops. The bookshop is my favourite. Love the smell of the place too (you’ll see) and I always imagine my grandma who made the two mile walk there every day from her home as a teenager, to work there when it was still a worsted mill.

The gateway to the dales is well worth a visit. Plenty of shops bars and restaurants. Weekly markets. Canal and a castle. Plenty to keep you busy for a day.

Food scene

Well worth a trip over the hill into the other ‘happy’ valley. The setting for the tv series, Happy Valley has plenty to see and do, including lots of shopping and places to eat. Our favourite for coffee and cake is Mooch.

Eating and drinking

Our favourite places to eat, have coffee, drink cocktails and buy food.
We love the Hawthorn for it’s decor and atmosphere. Great cocktails and the Sunday roast is fab.

The BEST hot chocolate ever. There I’ve said it. Bold statement. Great for gluten free cake too to go with. Book your table on an evening or you will be disappointed. Sharing plates are unusual, interesting and delicious.

Love this place for its coffee. You will find their own ground blend often lurking in our fridge. Please help yourself if you do and you will see why. The deli counter is a must and if you fancy a cosy night in by the fire, order one of their deli boxes and some olives and you’ve cracked it. The wine selection is great too. If it’s a special occasion, I can highly recommend their champagne ;)
