The heart of Cowaramup has become a canvas for inspiring and colourful art, making it a beautiful town to explore.
The Lion’s Shed in Pioneer Park features a mural by talented artist, Brendan See, illustrating Purple Crested Lorikeets or Cowara Birds after which the town is named. Head inside to find your own piece of recycled art or hidden treasure or gather bits and bobs to upcycle your own original.
Standing tall in the clouds above Pioneer Park you’ll find the infamous ‘Rump on a Stump’. The tongue-and-cheek piece by local artist Ron Roozen has been watching over the town since 2010 when it was installed as part of the world-wide phenomenon Cow Parade.
If you’re not the artistic type take the time to discover some of the unique local pieces displayed in many of the shops in town, and don’t forget to wander to Mukau’s gallery at the top of their stairs just to be tempted.
On the facade of Moonhaven Soaps & Lotions is the latest mural to be painted in the town, another of Brendan’s magnificent art pieces featuring local flora and birds, and the fragrance wafting out from the shop makes it a great stopping point. Just around the corner on the northern wall of Cowaramup Agencies is Anita Revel’s Cowara bird wings – a great interactive art piece to stop and get a photo with. From here you might cross the road and take in the cacao pods painted on the floor of Temper Temper Chocolate, which shares retail space with Two Cracks Coffee and 7 Seas Tea – a convenient place for all your hot beverage needs!
Weave your way north to Alan Meyburgh’s Cowara Bird statue at the Black Sheep Deli, and grab a choc mint slice or piece of cake (everything on their counter could be considered an art piece). From here you can look across the road at the roasting shed for Red Feather Coffee, easily identified by the giant painting of a red-tail black cockatoo feather on the outside.
Far from just a Friesian black and white, Cowaramup is a colourful place to soak up and enjoy.
