Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

In 1952 the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path was designated as a National Park. It is the only coastal National Park in Britain. It stretches for 186 miles and the only way to really experience its magnificence is to get your walking boots on, pack your lunch and get out there! Not only will you enjoy the spectacular scenery but also the plants, animals and birds that live in this wonderful, protected habitat. National Geographic judged the Pembrokeshire coast as the second best coastal destination in the WORLD! WOW!!! https://www.visitpembrokeshire.com/explore-pembrokeshire/wildlife-and-nature https://www.visitpembrokeshire.com/explore-pembrokeshire/coast-path https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/coastal-destinations-rated/top-rated/
Marloes Sands is a spectacular, remote beach approx 1.5 kms long. To get there, park in the Marloes National Trust carpark and follow the signs to the beach/coastal path. From September - November you can see mother seals (cows) and their pups on the rocky bays below the cliffs.

Skomer Island is renowned for its wildlife. The Atlantic puffin colony is the largest in southern Britain and half the world's population of Manx shearwaters nest on the island. We have also seen seals, short eared owls, guillemots and razorbills. Skomer is a national nature reserve, a Site of Special Scientific Interest and a Special Protection Area. It is surrounded by a marine nature reserve and is managed by the Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales. There are daily boat trips to Skomer from April to the end of September. Park in the National Trust carpark (SM760090) You need to buy a ticket to land on Skomer at Lockley Lodge at the top of St Martins Haven and show your landing ticket to the boatman. Then you pay the boatman for your trip across to the island. It's worth it, I promise!

Sandy Haven is our local beach, a mere 12-15 minute walk along a country footpath starting 100m from the cottage; or a 1 mile drive from the cottage along a narrow country lane to a free car park overlooking the beach and the coastal path. At the end of the lane there is a slipway into Sandy Haven 'Pill' (waterway) which is mostly sandy with a small stream. The Pill can be crossed for approx 2 hours either side of low tide. There is another slipway on the western side of the Pill. The top of the beach is mostly red rocks and rock pools but low tide reveals a vast expanse of sand which gives the beach its name! It's a fabulous open space at low tide and of course completely dog friendly.

Neighbourhood

Our cottage is situated on the outskirts of the small village of Herbrandston. We are the middle house in a terrace of three properties converted from the old Fold Farmhouse. We have private parking for 2 cars in an enclosed courtyard. In front of the cottage is a country lane which leads to Sandy Haven 1 mile away. Or you can walk 12-15 minutes to the eastern part of the beach, and the Pembrokeshire Coastal Path along a country footpath 100 m from the cottage.
Three miles east of the village (5 minutes by car) is Milford Haven and the impressive new Milford Waterfront marina with a large Tesco, trendy restaurants and bars as well as boutiques, craft shops, family activities and even a cinema and local theatre. To the West Dale (15 minutes) Marloes and St Brides are perfect for walking, water-sports and wildlife. Head north 10-12 minutes by car and you're in Little Haven, a picturesque little bay with three pubs and restaurants. Carry on along the coastal road and you'll pass Broad Haven, Druidstone, Newgale, Solva and arrive at St David's, Wales' smallest city with its iconic cathedral. All this, on the doorstep, makes Fold House Cottage a perfect base for exploring our magnificent coast and countryside.
