Best things to do in Ptuj

Point of Interest
“Ptuj - The oldest town in Slovenia (Poetovia), nestled between gentle wine-growing hills and the River Drava. The castle above the town with the oldest wine cellars dominates over the streets with one of the most colourful carnivals in the world and the Kurenti masks, the exceptional character of which has also been recognised by UNESCO. The Terme Ptuj Spa is nearby. ”

“The largest Slovenian lake is at the same time also one of the most attractive ones, as over 230 bird species can be found nesting in the protected area around the water. These include rare and protected species, such as cormorants, common terns, and black-headed gulls, and birdwatchers from all over Europe migrate here to observe them.”

“The Turnišče castle park is a protected monument due to its importance. The garden designed in the baroque style was expanded together with the castle complex at the beginning of the 19th century, when English garden features were added. The park still boasts its remarkable specimens of the red birch, oak, linden tree and sycamore. Next to the park, stream Studenčnica flows into natural lakes, whose banks became important nesting ground and habitat for a number of birds due to overgrowing.”

Φαγητό
“The story of the oldest Slovenian wine cellar speaks of the long tradition of winemaking in Ptuj. Its beginnings go back as far as 1239, where Minorite friars built a wine cellar under their monastery. Its extensive collection of vintage wines includes a special treasure – Zlata trta (Golden Vine) from 1917, which is considered the oldest Slovenian wine. In addition to keeping exceptional vintage wines, the Ptuj Wine Cellar is also known as a cellar that creates pleasant, contemporary, and popular wines behind its thick historical walls. Opening hours: Mon - Fri: 09.00 - 15.00. You have to make a reservation: 0038641 486 258 . Prices starts from 15€ per person for basic tour (4 vines, 1.5h)”

“Like a beautiful castle park, the Ptuj golf course stretches over more than 50 ha of greens just below the Ptuj Castle. The 18-hole course surprises guests with its diverse terrain, and the high number of water obstacles on the Studenčnica stream and the two lakes. Golf lovers will always remember the 14th hole, which requires a spectacular swing that will carry the ball to an island.”

“If you need a rice or noodle fix or just a break from traditional Slovenian fare, try the 'Chinese Garden', Ptuj’s long-established Chinese restaurant, just opposite the footbridge over the Drava. It has a fair few vegetable dishes on its menu.”

“Museum’s most famous collections are showcased at the Ptuj Castle. Some of the most interesting collections are a collection of arms with over 500 pieces of cold weapons and fire arms, as well as armor and other protection gear used between the 15th and 20th century, and the extensive collection of old musical instruments. The castle’s rooms with their furniture and art from the period between the 16th and 20th centuries are a special treat.
