Hurricane Dorian update/December 2019
Great Guana Cay suffered extensive damage during Dorian, and is in the process of rebuilding.
While Guana and the Abacos would love your support, there is currently still no power on the island, and no time frame as to when it will be restored.
We’re so grateful for your love of Guana and your interest in our house, and hope you won’t hesitate to get in touch - we’d be happy to share whatever up to the minute information we have about the island.
We’re potentially able to accommodate people coming to the island to work and assist in the rebuilding effort, and would love to have the opportunity to discuss what that would look like in further detail.
Donations to the recovery effort are tremendously appreciated, and can be made via the link below. And please read on to hear more about the island and our house and all the beauty of Great Guana Cay!
"Keep Smiling" is a beautiful home featuring high end amenities, an open plan living area and kitchen, and extensive wraparound decking - covered and uncovered - for the perfect island vacation experience. Expansive landscaping adds to the overall serenity and character of the house.
“Keep Smiling” is open and welcoming, with a relaxed living area filled with a super comfortable, cozy sofa, chaise and chairs, a dining table for six, an island bar with bar stools, and a gourmet kitchen. Vaulted ceilings paneled in Cypress wood ensure the house is airy and filled with light.
The kitchen is equipped with just about everything you could need, including a Thermador gas range, a Kitchenaid fridge and freezer, two Kitchenaid ovens, a Kitchenaid dishwasher, and a microwave. You’ll also find plenty of pots and pans for cooking, an excellent array of knives and serving dishes, and loads of plates, bowls, cups and glasses (including plasticware to take outside).
Just next door to the kitchen there’s a utility room with a washer and drier, along with a cupboard filled with beach towels.
There are two bedrooms downstairs. The master bedroom has a king size bed, ceiling fan, side tables, chaise for relaxing, and french doors that open on to the deck, along with a large master bathroom complete with a double shower and double sinks and a large walk-in closet. The downstairs guest bedroom has a queen size bed, ceiling fan, side tables and mini sofa. The downstairs bathroom is right outside the door with a tub/shower combo.
The third bedroom is upstairs, with a small deck looking out on to the front lawn, a ceiling fan and a reading nook with an inviting chaise.
Outside, you’ll find large deck spaces with a gas grill, two dining tables, plenty of chairs, and plenty of comfortable loungers for sunbathing.
The beach is 50 feet from the back deck and offers some of the softest sand in the world. There are only 3 homes on the one mile stretch of beach, guaranteeing peace and privacy. The water is crystal clear with stunning colors, sloping gradually to the reef, and stunning marine life featuring turtles, rays, large groupers and angel fish.

If you haven't been to Great Guana Cay and are contemplating a trip, we'd love to have the opportunity to correspond via email or chat on the phone to talk you through what a trip to the island looks like - booking flights to Marsh Harbour (our closest airport), taking the ferry to Guana, getting provisions, and all the things you can do once on the island.
In the meantime, the essentials are as follows: from the Marsh Harbour airport you take a 7 or 8 minute taxi ride to the Conch Inn Marina, where you jump on a 30 minute ferry to Guana (ferries run about every two hours during the day). Once on Guana, our property manager will greet you at the dock, help you collect your golf cart, and lead you to Keep Smiling.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION TO NOTE
The utility infrastructure in the Abacos (and in the Bahamas in general) is continually striving forward, but based on equipment issue and the number of tourists visiting the islands during peak times, you may experience power outages during your stay. These are usually short in duration (less than 90 minutes). Occasionally they can last several hours. Should this happen, our caretaker will come and start the generator for you.
There are no medical doctors or clinics on the island. There is a Guana fire and rescue operation that can provide assistance in case of serious emergency. There is also medical staff on duty at Baker's Bay Resort on the north part of the island for extreme emergencies. There is a hospital and several medical clinics in Marsh Harbour.
We are committed to helping our guests avoid potential scams, which are, unfortunately, all too prevalent. No vacation rental website - Airbnb or others - nor us will EVER ask you to pay via wire transfer, check or money order. If you receive an email asking you to pay via one of these methods (emails can be hijacked by fraudsters), it is a scam. Only make payments through the Airbnb.com website with a credit card.
Rent a golf cart for your stay, and you'll have the exceptional island of Great Guana Cay - all 7 miles of it! - at your disposal. From exploring deserted beaches to body surfing, beachcombing to kayaking, sipping a cocktail and watching the sunset at a local beach front bar to stocking up on provisions in the Guana Cay settlement for cooking a special meal at home.
And if you rent a boat, or take advantage of a charter company excursion, you can explore the Abacos myriad of bays, coves and protected harbors, deep sea fish, scuba dive, or island hop to Marsh Harbour, Hopetown, Man O War, Treasure Cay or Green Turtle Cay (perhaps a restaurant and beach bar crawl?!).
The lagoon between Great Guana Cay and Scotland Cay - a stone's throw away by boat- is an incredible place to spend the day, and the underwater scenery at Fowl Cay Marine Reserve - just a little bit further by boat - is some of the best in the Caribbean.
