Unfortunately this was my first unpleasant experience with a guest through AirBnB. I was going to keep this to myself, but since I received this untrue review, I feel obliged to write a reaction and tell my side of the story.
Jeimi contacted me last minute. It says in her profile that she speaks French, but she actually only speaks Spanish, not a word of French or very bad, broken English that you can barely make sense of. I ended up telling her she could write her questions in Spanish, and I'll understand by using a translator. In written, before making the reservation, she kept asking me about if the intercom was working fine. She also asked for my phone number so we could communicate that way, instead of through AirBnB. I did not give her my number and answered her through the website. I thought it was a little strange that she put so much emphasis on the intercom working fine. As she had two good reviews at that time, I decided to accept her reservation. She also states here that she had to wait before getting in to the apartment. She knew this before booking, as she contacted me last minute and I wrote her that check-in would only be possible after 4pm. So she was aware of this before confirming the booking.
A couple of hours after she checked in, she contacted me on (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN). I asked her if everything was fine. She said all was very well and asked if she could stay 6 extra days, and pay me in cash. As I said before, I had a strange feeling with her from the beginning (even though we had never met, I only had been emailing with her, but even in writing she made me feel uncomfortable. It was our host that welcomed her to the apartment, so we had never actually met in person). I texted her back, saying that paying in cash was not an option and that she had to proceed through AirBnB, if she wished to stay longer. Her answer was - and I am copying exactly her words here: 'Is there way to do business with you directly?' As I just told her 'no' a first time, now she really was making me feel uncomfortable. I answered a second time, a little more firm this time: 'No. I only accept bookings through the website.' Her answer to this: So how it is done? I felt like she was playing dumb at this point, as she just made the booking a day ago, she very well knew how it worked! At this point, I contacted our host and asked her if the check-in with this guest earlier went well, and if she noticed anything out of the usual. She immediately answered me that she, as well, had had a bad feeling with her. She explained to me that she couldn't communicate with her in any way either, and that the friend that was accompanying her did all the talking for her. She said that again, they kept insisting as to the interphone was working well, and they even had our host go outside and ring the bell so they could check on the inside if the camera worked. Our host then asked them why this was so important, and she said she got an unclear answer about some delivery... she also said Jeimi asked for a second pair of sheets, while she only booked for 4 nights, so she politely refused this.
As I got a second opinion now and we both had the same unpleasant premonition with this person, and she clearly had the intention to have strange people over, I called AirBnB to ask for their opinion and see if I had to take action on this. They advised me that indeed her behavior was not normal, and told me that they could step in if I wanted to. As I didn't want to jump to conclusions too fast, I told them I'd give it a chance, as it was only for 4 nights. But at least I felt a little relieved that AirBnB now had this on file already, in case things would get worse and I had to ask them to step in.
After all this, I decided I didn't want her any longer in the apartment then what she originally booked for, and so I answered Jeimi and thanked her for her interest but told her it was not possible to stay any longer. She answered it was not a problem and thanked me. After that she sent me another text, again with an unclear explanation and in English that I could barely make up what she was trying to say, stating that if I should have any problems with her payment made through AirBnB, that I had to contact her and she would arrange it, and telling me not to contact AirBnB directly about this. And if the payment would go through fine, to forget about her message. Another message that made me feel very uncomfortable! I didn't hear her anymore after that.
So she never indicated to me that there was any problem with the apartment. Now that I read her review, she is stating that the mattress is damaged and sleeps very bad, that she had to wait till 5pm to get in to the apartment, and again our host had her leave early, before 3pm (she left at 1pm), and that she felt unsafe because anyone can just enter the apartment building. To all of this, I have to respond that these are absolute lies:
-the mattress is new and in perfect condition and is of the highest quality! Having worked as a flight attendant myself for years and thus constantly sleeping in hotels all over the world, I know how important a good bed is and I paid a lot of money to offer guests the highest standard in beds!
-as said before, I told her before she confirmed the reservation that because it was a last minute booking, check-in was only possible after 4pm, so she was aware of this.
-as stated in my ad, check-out is normally at 11pm. We let her stay until 1pm, but still she seems to be mad that she couldn't stay until 3pm.
-the apartment is a new building (built in 2015), in a safe neighborhood, there is an intercom AND 2 different doors in the entrance way, before you can even access the private hallways. So it is absolutely safe, as you can read in previous reviews as well!
I am glad I trusted my initial gut feeling about Jeimi, and was relieved when she had left the apartment. Our host and myself felt very uncomfortable with her presence, and left us feeling like she was doing some questionable business in our space. It seems that she wrote a bad review because I refused to take her cash money outside of AirBnB.
Therefore I will not recommend her to other hosts, and I would definitely not have her in my apartment anymore.
Other hosts, feel free to message me should you require more information.
