A beautiful and enchanting house, close to Paris, but far enough away to be surrounded by farmland and forests of the Ile de France.
Within easy driving distance are the chateau of Versailles, Chartes cathedral, and Normandy beaches
Our home was originally built as a monastic hospital in the middle of the sixteenth century under an edict by Louis XIV, and was known as the Ancien Hotel Dieu. It has been completely remodelled and modernised by the present owners, restoring the charm of the house with modern facilities - zero carbon heating system, wifi, airplay audio system etc
It is a perfect for families looking for a calm spot to reunite, and as a base for exploring both Paris and the chateaux and countryside around the city.
The house was built on the ramparts of what used to be a fortified village, Neauphle le Chateau. Under the house survive cellars dating from the eleventh century. The house is built on the forward edge of a hill so has wonderful views across the garden and out over farmland to the west. The house was completely restored two years ago to enhance the ancient character while bringing in the best of modern living. It is filled with objects and books gathered over three generations by the same family, the present owner's grandfather and his father, the writer, Sir Peter Quennell.
The house has a very private garden and is hidden behind a high gate with a sun filled cobbled courtyard. There is a fountain and fish pond many hundreds of years old. Beside the house is a large garden of grass, hedges and an abundance of roses. On a lower terrace there are an organic vegetable garden, fruit trees and vines, as well as strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and kiwifruit depending on the time of year. There is also a tree house to be discovered, hidden in an ancient conifer hedge.
The guest has sole use of the house and gardens. For larger parties there is the option of renting the chapel as well to add an additional two bedrooms, bathroom and reception / kitchen.
We will be staying nearby for an questions. If not will be available via mobile, sms or email for any questions you may have.
The area is a perfect mix of charming french villages and small towns, with easy access to Versailles, Paris, Monet's house at Giverny, and the Normandy Beaches.
The house is a 2 min walk to a great bakery, butcher, restaurants and bars in our little town. There are very good restaurants in the surroundings to cater to every taste from simple meals to gourmet feasts.
It has great views over countryside and woods
A car is strongly recommended to make the most of the area, but to get to Paris, there is a regular train that takes 30mins to Montparnasse, with a station 2 miles away.
The house could be available for long lets between July 2015 and June 2016
It is our home, so we hope it has more charm than many rentals. It is a house that is lived in every day, so you will find stores in the cupboards, DVDs and toys - all we ask is you treat it as your own and take care of the house during your stay. The house is no smoking, but we can allow pets - as long as we know in advance.
