Casa Lyobaa is a one-of-a-kind sanctuary for travelers—a base for exploration and a destination in itself. A short walk from the Mitla ruins, the three-acre property features organic gardens with hundreds of species of plants, a solar-heated pool, palapa, and standalone guest kitchen and living space. The four guestrooms have been appointed with great care, from the handwoven blankets and rugs from our favorite weavers, to local pottery and art. Solar panels provide nearly all electricity.

Ο χώρος
Lyobaa (lee-oh-baa) is the Zapotec name for Mitla (Mictlán in Nahuatl). It means place of rest.

Our home has been a labor of love for more than 30 years—a love that’s readily apparent once you enter the property and experience the sense of peace that pervades it. We’re located about 500 meters from the ruins along a road that turns from paved to unpaved about halfway down, and that continues to prehistoric cave paintings about 10 minutes beyond the house (we can arrange an excellent tour). Our three acres are bound by a small seasonal river, a smaller seasonal stream, and countryside. The gardens include hundreds of native and non-native species—from rare cacti, agaves, and yuccas, to pomegranate, macadamia nut, and orange trees. Bird life is often abundant, including scarlet tanagers, orioles, hummingbirds, and gray-breasted woodpeckers. Trails for hiking run from just outside our gate, and we have a number of other hiking recommendations for the area (many on trails that we have mapped).

The guesthouse has four spacious rooms, each with private entrances and bathrooms with hot showers. Each room has two double beds (the beds are firm). Two of the rooms (Guaje and Candelabra) have a daybed. The other two (Jacaranda and Agave) have a desk instead. WIFI is available in the kitchen/living space and pool/palapa, but we’ve decided for now to maintain the guestrooms WIFI-free (although there is surprisingly good cell service throughout the property).

A separate standalone guest building in front of the pool houses the kitchen and living/dining areas. It is fully stocked and furnished, with surprises throughout (like a vintage record collection and player).

The large pool is solar heated; the water circulates from the pool to the heating system atop the guesthouse and back down. The adjacent palapa is an idyllic space to relax, with seating and hammocks surrounded by bamboo, coffee plants, palms, and ferns.

We practice progressive environmental and labor practices. Solar panels supply nearly all electricity used by guests. We compost and recycle, and the bathrooms feature water-saving toilets and showers.

Note that there are also two large, friendly dogs on the grounds.

Πρόσβαση επισκεπτών
Guests have exclusive access to the swimming pool, palapa, and building housing the guest kitchen and living space. The main house where we live is on the opposite end of the property from the guesthouse (the pool is in the middle).

Guests receive front entrance and room keys on arrival and come and go as they please. We ask that noise in the common areas be kept to a minimum after 9:00pm.

Άλλα στοιχεία που πρέπει να γνωρίζετε
Mitla is both a perfect base for exploring Oaxaca and an incredible destination in itself. Here are a few of the things we find captivating about the town. First, the evidence of prehistoric life here is unmatched in this part of Mexico. In the caves of Mitla and Yagul, archaeologists have discovered the oldest cultivated squash and maize in the Americas, along with cave paintings. It’s for that reason that Mitla and Yagul have been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Second are the ruins that have become woven into the fabric of the town. In the waning days of Monte Alban, Mitla rapidly grew into the center of the Zapotec theocracy. And the town developed a deep interrelationship with the nearby sites of Yagul, Baballito Blanco, Lambityeco, Loma Larga, and Matatlan. The stonework, tombs, and tunnels here are well worth at least an afternoon of exploration.

Third, Mitla is a place where traditional Zapotec culture and the old ways survive—the clacking of looms at all hours, the Zapotec spoken in the market by women selling everything from homemade mole and tortillas to fresh gladiolus and copal incense, the myriad winter festivals, and the more spontaneous parties where bands and processions often materialize from nowhere.

Fourth is beauty of the countryside and the hiking. Just leaving the house, you enter a new ecosystem hiking up the ridge. The rock formations, cacti, cliffs, and caves never cease to inspire, and we continue to map new trails. We can offer some guided hikes (including an epic hike to Hierve el Agua and then a hidden waterfall and swimming hole two hours beyond). We can also offer suggestions and directions for self-guided exploration.

Fifth: mezcal. Mitla and Matatlan are the epicenter of mezcal production, with hundreds of small palenques and distilleries in the area. There are a dozen varieties of agave growing on our property alone, and we’re happy to provide recommendations for our favorite sampling spots.

That’s just Mitla. You’ll find so much more to explore in just a one-hour radius of town: Hierve el Agua, the (rightfully) famed Sunday market in Tlacolula, rug weaving in Teotitlan del Valle and Santa Ana del Valle, red clay pottery created using ancient methods in San Marcos Tlapazola, and our favorite church in Tlacochahuaya (just to name a few). You can also do a longer day trip to the mountain towns of Benito Juarez and Cuajimoloyas (the hike between the two is stunning).

The home is set on the outskirts of town. You feel like you're in the countryside, even though you're only a short walk from the ruins, and about a 25-minute walk from the main plaza. During the rainy season, a river and creek run along two sides of the property. The neighborhood, like Mitla itself, is very safe. Upon booking, we provide guests with an interactive map of town, showing everything from where to buy groceries to our favorite restaurants and where to catch the shared truck to Hierve el Agua.
