Our home is a newly renovated, 100+ year old, raised double shotgun, in the heart of the trendiest neighborhood of New Orleans. 2 blocks from the best part of Magazine St... with all the great restaurants & shopping... And just minutes from downtown! Perfect for those looking to save some money on their trip, but still want to have a great location.

Ο χώρος
The home/apartment a 750 sq ft 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom ground floor/basement apartment that is on one side of the house, and we live on the other. It's a 120+ year old raised double shotgun style house, but we remodeled the entire home 3 years ago. You have a queen size bed in the bedroom, a cute kitchen with everything you need, and a dining room... but who needs the dining room when you have so many great restaurants so close! We keep an air mattress, and the apartment has plenty of space for the bed... The house is the traditional shotgun set up with the rooms being:living room in the front, then dinning room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom in the back. There is an apartment above this unit, so like most multi story homes/apartments, you'll hear walking, etc. We provide sleep machines/white noise makers that take care of anything you aren't used to.
History of the house: Our home is made with barge board construction, which is a term that comes from how the wood was sourced. In the 1800's, thousands of barges full of goods destined for the Caribbean, South America, and Europe, were shipped down the Mississippi River to New Orleans. Once they were unloaded, the goods were transferred to ocean going vessels, and there was no way to transport the barges back up the river. The barges were deconstructed, and the wood was all re-purposed as materials to build the historic homes you see today. Our home was originally built 3 ft off the ground, and in the same style and construction as most others on our street, but after the major flood of 1927, the original first floor (now second floor) was raised to the height you will see today.
Apartment has independent front entrance, with an exterior security camera.

You can access the laundry through your secure, rear door. It is a shared laundry room with the upstairs tenant, so don't be alarmed if you hear someone using it.

The neighborhood is a very popular destination because of the Magazine Street area... lots of shops, dining options, and pubs/bars. The main stretch is from Washington Avenue to Louisiana avenue... with another popular stretch being from Jackson Avenue to about Race St. Very walkable, and lots of people around. You can walk up Washington Avenue into the heart of the Garden District and see the beautiful historic mansions, and take a few different history tours.

Brunch
Broken egg cafe... traditional breakfast place 3 blocks
Slim Goodies - Diner style, but they have a lot of quality twists on the traditional diner menu.
Ruby Slipper - Breakfast and Lunch... 2 blocks. Our absolute favorite.. expansion of a much loved local chain of eateries. very popular, and there is likely a wait... call ahead to get on the list to skip the wait.
Red Dog Diner - 4 blocks - new and getting more and more popular all the time.
Atchafalaya - excellent higher end brunch place. Thurs - Monday. 6 blocks away...

Sandwiches/Po Boys
District Doughnuts, Sliders and coffee (very popular and 'hip' right now) 7 blocks
Stein's Deli - NY style deli - 7 blocks - great sandwich place, and they sell a lot of specialty bottled beer.
Mahoney's Poboys - 8 blocks away - well known local place... they do the traditional New Orleans Po Boys well.
Magazine Po-Boy & Sandwich Shop - 5 blocks - also a decently well known local place... they do the traditional New Orleans Po Boys pretty well. Much lower volume than Mahoney's above, as Magazine's Poboy's hours are limited.
Tracey's Irish Sports Pub - Po Boys - 3 blocks Pretty good poboys and bar food... Lots of fried food options.
Parasol's - dive bar known for great poboys - 2 blocks
Dat Dog - 8 blocks... a great funky gourmet hotdog place... with a nice patio area and beer selection. they do hamburgers and chicken also.
Poke Loa - one of my favorite new places, If you aren't familiar with Poke, it's fast food casual where they do amazing sushi/salad type creations. I recommend getting one of their signature bowls, with only small adjustments to your tastes.

Sit Down Casual
Joey K's - Home Style Creole - one of our fav's
Ignatious - creole food
Basin - seafood/new orleans food... another favorite, some entree's are on the higher end, but reasonably priced for how much we enjoy it. 7 blocks... Good happy hour til 7pm
Pita Hut Plus - This place is new, and the reviews are mixed... some people say it's great, other have had bad experiences... I think with the new-ness, they are working out some kinks... It's a little on the expensive side. - 5 blocks
Reginelis - local chain pizza place 8 blocks.. we enjoy it.
The Rum House - Caribbean Taco place... huge variety, very good, and very popular.
Sake Cafe - sushi
