Hale Iki is more than just another place to stay - it is an experience! A fresh, light-filled, off-grid tiny house nestled in a clearing in the rainforest, Hale Iki made its media debut on HGTVs Tiny House Hunters. Since then it’s been upgraded with a solar refrigerator and a multitude of Pinterest-worthy additions. If you think tiny house living might be for you, we encourage you to come stay with us!

"This place is so magical. The first 30 minutes we were here we only whispered because we didn't want to disturb the peace and quiet!"

Hale Iki is a very special place. Please read the section below, just to make sure it’s the right special place for you!

1. Accessibility. The house is much more accessible than many tiny houses, but there are a few steps along the way. There are two steps up to the lanai, and one into the house. Good news - unlike some tiny homes the bed is on the main floor, so no ladders to climb down in the middle of the night!

2. Water. We put the rainforest to good use! Rainwater is collected and used to run the house, which is perfect for showering and doing dishes, but not for drinking. A bottle of water will be provided, and there is a water dispenser in the kitchen if you need refills.

3. Lighting. All our electricity comes from the sun. The batteries charge up during the day and are stored for use at night. Turning off lights or electronics when not in use will help the energy last. The house has plenty of windows and amazing skylights.

4. Temperature. At 3,500 feet, Volcano can be a bit wet, and the temperature is about 10 degrees cooler than at the coast. We find it refreshing — a break from the heat and humidity! Hale Iki does not have an indoor heater, but there is a chiminea (outdoor fireplace) on the lanai. Our daytime temperatures are wonderfully mild, so just open the windows and doors for a refreshing breeze.

The Big Island has 10 of the world’s 14 climate zones. It is always wise to dress in layers and to bring a light jacket, especially if you are visiting Volcanoes National Park at night (and you should visit at night!).

5. Location. Located on just over 3/4 of an acre and backing up to the forest reserve, Hale Iki is very private. There are few lights, which means spectacular stargazing when the sky is clear. Flashlights are available for those late night returns home, and motion sensing lights guide you along the lanai.

6. Connectivity. Time to let go of all your wires and obligations! Being off-grid and hidden on a large lot, internet isn’t currently an option. Some cell service is available (depends on your provider and where you are standing). We do have a small TV and DVD player for evening electronic entertainment. You can rent recent titles at the Lower Store in Volcano Village or at the Red Box at the Foodland in Kea’au. A bluetooth speaker will let you hook up and play your tunes wire free.

6. Wildlife. All of Volcano is a rainforest and with it comes wildlife. There are lots of birds in our forest, including pheasants which like to wander around in little packs. You’ll see them along the road and sometimes in the yard. They are fun to watch. We also have wild pigs — they have no interest in people, but love to tear up the yard looking for bugs! They are easily scared off. Just think of it as some entertainment and stories to tell when you get home!

- There are some special considerations with bring off-grid. We rely on solar for power, rainwater catchment for our water, and have a gas stove. Please be kind to our resources and conserve whenever possible. Please, no hair dryers (drying your hair one time equals two weeks of flushing the toilet!)

- There is only one bed (queen size), so accommodating more than two people is not possible.

- Remove shoes and slippas before entering the house.

- Please follow our house rules when checking out: 1) Do your dishes (leaving them in the dish rack is fine!) 2) Put your towels in the basket 3) Turn off the inverter to preserve power for the next guest 4) Put the key back in the lockbox

Mark and Lucretia thought of every detail, and our experience in Volcano definitely made for some lifelong memories. The home is incredibly convenient to the national park, with a small store between for coffee or odds and ends. The home itself was unbelievably cozy and stocked with everything we could need.

The location to Volcanoes National Park was incredible (about 4 miles)...... The home setting was so peaceful (like living in the forrest).....the flora was incredible.....birds singing every morning was great. It did rain a bit while we were there, but that did not affect our ability to have power in the home. Solar was more than sufficient. The lanai with the bbq and chimenea were awesome after a long day of exploring the island. Were were here for 7 full days and communications to Mark were excellent. They were very gracious hosts ! I highly recommend their place.

Lovely, private oasis near Volcano center. With perfect directions and communication from Mark & Lucretia, we immediately felt at home with the note and treats. The tiny home could not be better appointed and has exactly everything one needs to enjoy the space. Well-designed, thoughtful, comfortable, with great light in the mornings, we recommend this as an ideal setting pre and post adventures to the national park. Thank you, Mark & Lucretia!
