In the middle of the Natural Park of Serra de São Mamede at Castelo de Vide, province of Alentejo in the South of Portugal, rises the Ancient Convent of Nossa Senhora da Vitória.
The Convent was built in 1639 with the objective of accommodating the monks of the religious order of Saint John of God and it accomplished its goal until 1800. By that time it became a Military Hospital due to the Napoleonic invasions. It was abandoned in the middle of the XIX century becoming, eventually, a ruin. A very meticulous work of restoration provided the Convent with its original glow turning it into an exclusive place with a unique atmosphere.
The Natural Park of São Mamede is one of the most important in Portugal containing an incredible biodiversity. Countless species of animals and plants can only be found here. A recent BBC Wildlife documentary revealed that Alentejo is the last untouched natural ecosystem in Europe.
