My friends and I had a wonderful stay at Casa Patio Bonita. First, the house itself is large and lovely. We had the multi-person dorm to ourselves and the air conditioning (which was desperately needed) worked perfectly. The hotel is well-named -- there is a lovely patio with a wonderful breeze that is perfect for having a glass of wine or eating dinner that you've made in the well-stocked kitchen.
Second, Claudia could not have been nicer. Not only did she help us arrange a guide to take us to Cabo de la Vela (more on that below), but she also was kind enough to a) store our bags when we went and b) let us shower when we got back, even though we had checked out several days earlier. All in all, this hotel is a great jumping off point for Cabo de la Vela, Puntas Gallinas, and any other nearby attractions. (Although a bit more expensive than more traditional hostels, it's worth treating yourself to comfortable accommodations that will store your belongings before or after you head to those remote, very bare bones locations.)
(NOTE: the address that appeared on the reservation listing was not complete and it took a lot of effort for our cab driver to find the house. Clarify the full address with Caludia and Glen before arriving.)
(A note about getting a guide: if you are thinking about going to Cabo de la Vela or las Puntas Gallinas you should ABSOLUTELY take Claudia up on her offer to connect you with her friend Jose who will serve as your driver and tour guide. Although we were skeptical at first about whether we needed a guide and whether it would make financial sense, but we are sooo glad we decided to follow Claudia's advice. Luckily we split Jose's services with a couple from Colombia, Jose drove the five of us in his well-maintained, well-air conditioned jeep across the desert to Cabo de la Vela, telling us lots of information about the area and Colombia generally, and speaking very slowly so that everyone could understand. Once we arrived in Cabo de la Vela, he showed us some of its main attractions and brought us to a beautiful cove that would have been very difficult to access without a car. He also helped us arrange lodging, store our belongings in his car overnight, and he slept in a hammock near to ours so we felt safe throughout the night. He was so much fun to talk to and we truly cannot recommend his services more highly. Even if you don't stay at Casa Patio Bonita, you should contact Claudia and Glen and see if they would be willing to put you in touch Jose.)
