On this tour, we begin at the Edinburgh City Chambers where I'll provide a historical overview of the Royal Mile and why Edinburgh was considered the 'Athens of the North' during the Scottish Enlightenment. We'll also see memorials to Polish General Stanislaw Maczek, a heroic WW2 commander who became an Edinburgh barman, our own Hollywood Walk of Fame, and our connections with the legendary Nelson Mandela.

Following that, I'll tell you about the Luckenbooths and Mercat Cross where the City's main marketplace thrived for centuries, as well as where gruesome Public Executions were carried out. Also, learn about James Braidwood - the Father of Modern Firefighting.

In Parliament Square, I'll tell you about the political & religious turmoil ravaging Britain throughout the 16th and 17th centuries and how they centered largely on events here in Edinburgh.

Next, I'll tell you about the Palatial Signet Library and its Royal connections, the Athenian-inspired French Consulate building and the man behind one of the most photographed yet unknown statues in Edinburgh, the Duke of Buccleuch, as well as the Heart of Midlothian and stories about the horrific Old Tolbooth prison.

We conclude the tour inside St Giles. This magnificent near millennia-old Church memorializes some of the greatest, most tragic, most entertaining and most controversial figures and events in Scottish history.

My name is Blair and I am an experienced Tour Guide with a degree in Scottish History. I love sharing Edinburgh's dramatic history with people from all over the world, having worked abroad for many years.

This tour will focus on the City Chambers' hidden gems, the busy former central marketplace, its contribution to Edinburgh's Enlightenment, the crimes & punishments meted out accordingly.

Learn about Edinburgh's turbulent history throughout the shifting political climate and growing religious turmoil gripping Britain during the 16th - 17th centuries, all centred around Parliament Square and St Giles Cathedral

As Churchill once said, "Of all the small nations of this earth, perhaps only the ancient Greeks surpass the Scots in their contribution to mankind."

Περισσότερες συμβουλές

This a very easy-going tour, as it involves a lot of stories and anecdotes in a very short distance. It covers the heart and soul of the Royal Mile, without worrying about distance, mobility or weather. It's a good idea to bring your camera. Photo permits in St Giles cost £2 but are well worth it!
