Τι θα κάνετε

I'll meet you at the end of Gunpit Road in Bluff. After a safety briefing, we'll get oriented to the geography and history of Bluff. As the oldest town in New Zealand, there's a lot of history to share!

Our experience is going to take us along the walking tracks that circle Bluff Hill. The tracks range from coastal paths overlooking the Foveaux Strait and Stewart Island (Rakiora) to tracks that wind through dense forest.

I'm going to provide you with laminated cards to help identify the local wildlife - and discuss the absent birds such as kiwi and the plans for reintroduction onto the hill. I've got some great stories about the various plant species.

I'm going to take you behind the scenes of the Bluff Hill reserve to take a look at the predator control methods that are used. We'll walk one of the trap lines to understand how populations of possums, rats and mustelids are controlled and discuss the challenges ahead.

We're not going to race around the hill. We'll take our time and provide lots of great photography opportunities. The tour will last between 2-3 hours and is along well-formed tracks at all times. You will need a level of fitness needed to walk for two hours.

I live in Bluff in a house that backs onto the Bluff Hill Motupohue reserve - an area of regenerating native bush. I'm passionate about the New Zealand ecosystem and volunteer for the Bluff Hill Motupohue Environmental Trust, helping to eradicate the pest species that decimate native wildlife. That initiative is succeeding and native flora and fauna are recovering well. I want to share our knowledge of the effort that goes into protecting New Zealand's unique ecosystem - both in terms of plants and animals. I hold a Department of Conservation concession which qualifies me to provide guided walks on conservation land and as part of that have been safety audited by AdventureMark. I'm therefore qualified to provide informative, safe and above all fun experiences for my guests.

Πού θα είστε

We'll start at the WW2 gun emplacements that nature is slowly conquering - a key part Bluff's history.
The Foveaux Walkway is a spectacular track around the base of Bluff Hill. I'm going to show you the trap line which runs along this walkway.
The Glory Track winds through mature native forest and can provide respite from the elements on a stormy day. I'm going to share stories about the flora and fauna that's thriving on this track.

We got more of our money’s worth in this experience. We arrived an hour earlier (due to travel limitations from Invercargill) and David was accommodating enough to start the tour early even if we were willing to wait for the exact time. I am a beginner hiker and the trail was a bit challenging but doable. What made the hike really special was that I learned a lot from David about conservation and Bluff history. The views were also amazing, especially at Lookout point.

I had hesitated to book an experience because I thought maybe I could just explore the trails on Bluff Hill on my own. I'm so glad I chose to do the guided walk with David. Although there is some signage dotted about, it's not nearly enough to convey the history of the area, and I would have missed so much background information. It was a very blustery day--definitely follow the advice to dress in layers! The reward was amazing views of stormy seas and plenty of time on trails protected by native bush. We saw several native birds surprisingly close up. All in all, a delightful way to spend a morning.

This isn't a fitness challege - we'll take it slow and steady. But inevitably, we're walking on gravel tracks with some trip hazards. Please bring waterproofs - even in mid summer, rain is cold!
